Chez Weber - Chicago IL

Tasted double blind alongside the 1969, both from magnums. This came cross as very Left Bank Bordeaux-like to me, with tobacco, mature black plum and currant with some licorice. Very elegant. Turned out that this 1st wine was my favorite of all the 13 blind Cali cabs tasted tonight.

Tasted double blind alongside the lovely 1970. Magnum. Very mature to start, this was then on a precipitous decline.

Tasted double blind in 1973 flight. Very mature, very tired with mushroom and hints of memories of fruit past.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be 1973 flight. group liked this wine, but i found it less interesting, seeming slightly green, simple and bitter. I understand the other bottle at the dinner was much better.

Served double blind in what turned out to be 1973 flight. I easily identified this as Heitz Martha from the eucalyptus dominating the nose. Others found cork notes on nose, which I was unable to identify, but found a bitter, musty edge on finish that made me agree this was slightly corked. But the fruit quality was still there, and this was still my 2nd favorite wine of the flight, at 89 points.

Mature black fruit with cedar, mushroom and good concentration. Balance is the highlight here, this almost seemed like an elegant aged Bordeaux.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be 1975 flight. Past the point of being interesting, this seemed fairly oxidized.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be 1975 flight. Earth, leather and a trace mint hint I really enjoyed. Good density.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be 1975 flight. From magnum. Bright color for its age, intense fruit concentration. However, there was a mustiness some thought corky that detracted from the overall pleasure. Still very enjoyable, perhaps around 90 points tonight, but not a perfect magnum.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be an older Cali Cab flight. Plenty of earth and leather with some clear signs of life and power. Good overall.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be an even older Cali cab flight. I like old wine, but I like it because age can make it taste better. Age has made this wine very interesting, but just moderately tasty to me. Others thought it WOTN.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be older Cali Cab flight. Still enjoyable enough and interesting, but clearly over the hill.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be older Cali Cab flight. Also very interesting, while just moderately flavorful. Fruit clearly still hanging in there, even if it's using cobwebs to hang in.

From magnum. This is a wine with great potential, even if it isn't quite ready yet. All red fruit with more baking spice than I recall from other times tried in the past few years. Lots of acid, this still has a few edges to soften. Patience will be rewarded here. My favorite wine tonight, with 94-95 point potential.

Tasted double blind. I immediately thought this from Gevrey with meaty black fruit and some roasted game notes. Moderate power and length. Slight barnyard hints add some character, but perhaps more than I'd prefer.

Oxidized.

Ripe black berries on nose and palate. Ripeness balanced with enough structure to maintain excellent balance, particularly for the vintage.

Tasted double blind. Great aromatic start with spice, black currant and cassis. Similar flavors but less robust, and very firmly structured. I immediately thought this Bordeaux, and correctly identified this as Haut Brion when given a (First Growth) hint, but thought it slightly younger from another highly structured vintage.

Badly corked.

Great aromas of black fruit, liqueur and dark chocolate. Similar flavors, just still slightly backward. This may still have upside, and will most likely drink well for decades if well stored. A type of Bordeaux i truly enjoy.

Cigar box and mature black fruit aromas. Similar palate, just slightly more rugged finish than I'd prefer, but still tasty for now.

Massive and extremely ripe, showing plum, liqueur, espresso, dark chocolate and vanilla. Very fat, and not remotely my preferred style of wine, but certainly well done in its style.

Late night pop and pour. Some others didn't notice, but this too was corked.

No surprise that this came across as fairly sweet, but it came across as so dominated by Gewurztramier that I didn't fully enjoy its overall harmony compared to what I expect from this wine most of the time, particularly with cellar age.

I think I almost understand why people enjoy these significantly oxidative wines, but I don't really understand.

An interesting (mostly) Nebbiolo that cam across as slightly underripe, even with good red fruit and nice spice. slightly drying finish.

Tasted double blind. Still alive and kicking with mature black fruit, rounded textures and savory spice. I thought this was a 30+ year old Pomerol.

Great nose with mature black fruit, spice, mint and and leather. Flavors are similar, just lsightly less exciting, but this is a very charming wine still drinking well. I used to really enjoy Groth wines of this era in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but rarely taste them these days.

Slightly too warm by the time I tasted this wine, but this has a good concentration of black fruit with overall balance, with savory spice and plenty of softened structure supporting the fruit nicely on finish. Very good now.

Tasted double blind. Dark color. Intense aromas and flavors, showing almond, candied orange peel and faint papaya hints. Almost syrup-like consistency. Very good.

NV Bellavista Franciacorta Cuvée Brut 85 Points

From very large (3L?) bottle, not sure when disgorged. Seemingly mature apple with much more earthy and bready elements.
