Introduction

7 of us brought some excellent wines to Gevevieve. The food was great as well. Thanks go to everyone for bringing great wines, but Jason really brought the big guns with 2 amazing wines.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Split a bottle with 6 others over about 45 minutes. This starts out rather light and elegant. It gains body with time in the glass. Citrus first, then toasted brioche with time. I really like the balance here. It is definitely a more feminine champagne.

  • 1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée LV Flawed

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Oxidized. Drank next to the 1995 cuvee W, which was a stunner. This wine was considerably darker. in color. Both of the corks disintegrated.

  • 1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée W 92 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley

Slight oxidation, and yet manages to taste fresh. Nutty, caramel, toffee, lots of acid. Nice balance.

  • 2012 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Nice as always, but the oak seemed quite evident. Probably because it followed 2006 Taittinger Comte BDB and 1995 Kalin chardonnay. Nonetheless, a well-balanced california chardonnay.

  • 2005 La Pousse d'Or Corton-Clos du Roi 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Drank a good sized glass over an hour. Definitely Burgundy. Wet rocks, minerality, tart cherry fruit. Elegant. Young.

  • 2003 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Monogram 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Slow O'd for over an hour. I would not have guessed this wine to be from 2003, and I probably wouldn't have guessed pinot noir either. It is relatively substantial, lots of fruit and the oak is still fairly evident. This rather strikes me as a steak-house wine. Soft, flashy, fruity and slurpy tasty. This is a modern rich fruit-forward style.

  • 1983 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle Flawed

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Drank a good-sized glass over an hour. I'm marking this flawed, as it had brett on it that would blow off with a good swirl, only to reappear a couple minutes later. A fellow taster said this taste is "correct" for this wine. Well, then their house style has a dollup of brett in it. I was still able to enjoy this wine quite a bit, funk, tobacco, tar, earth.

  • 1997 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate Flawed

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I'm marking this flawed due to brett, even though it was still quite enjoyable. An old school California cabernet that has more in common with Bordeaux than most current napa cab. Even with the brett, I could give this 92+ easy.

  • 1994 Joseph Phelps Insignia 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Drank a glass over an hour. Fantastic cabernet. There is still a lot of fruit here along with spice, tobacco, and nice acidity. Incredibly balanced, slightly fruit-forward. I can't see anyone not liking this if they drink red wine. This is a rockstar wine.

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted about 3 hours. This is just getting into it's drinking window - I would prefer it with another 5+ years. Easy to drink nonetheless. Tannins are grippy. Fruit is big and mostly red. A lot of Bordeaux character.

  • 2007 Rudius Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted for 2 hours, then slow o'd for a couple hours. Big, over the top, and delicious. This isn't a behemoth like so many Napa cabs are, but there is no mistaking that it is Napa cab. Perfumed, loaded with flavor, more of a cocktail wine than anything else. Ends with some acid and minerals that keep it in check. 92-93, I could see others scoring it higher if they like modern Napa cabernet.

  • 2003 Château d'Yquem 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Drank a good-sized glass over about 30 minutes, which was fast because it was so darn tasty. So lush, so balanced. As always, elegant and lively. Gorgeous nose and palate. Lingering finish. This is everything I want from a Sauternes - spice, sweetness, acid, fruit. Orange marmalade, nectarine, honey, mango, and wildflowers.
