Introduction

Long lunch to celebrate the beginning of summer, with both wines being served blind, and there was an interesting comparison given the wines brought along.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1992 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Purchased on release as a part of a tasting pack through the Australian Wine Society - should have bought a truckload of them in retrospect...

Took this to 67 Pall Mall and it was served blind (in a flight of two). Clearly Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and picked as such by my mate (and called as mine by me), but he was not even close with the year as this showed so young and fresh.

Nose of blackcurrants, tobacco and eucalyptus, bit of chocolate in the mouth and very fine, completely integrated velvety tannins. Long length.

  • 2000 Château Trotanoy 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Taken to 67 Pall Mall by a friend and it was served blind (in a flight of two). Picked it as Bordeaux straight up, but initially confusing wine as the nose said left-bank, but everything about the taste/mouthfeel screamed right.

This is still very young, a deep saturated red in colour, dark berries and chocolate on the nose, full-bodied, with noticeable tannins still, albeit they are smooth. Long, long length.

Powerful wine with years and years ahead of it, but quite wonderful with a bit of a decant and the last glass was the best...

Closing

The Trotanoy was lovely and promises much pleasure for the coming decades, but the wine of the day was the Bin 707 as it was right in the zone...
