Introduction

Swung by after work to pick up a couple bottles from my cellar and it turned out some bottles were open. Quite a nice tasting to stumble upon!

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Tons of energy! I had my first glass without knowing the vintage and I figured it was a 2004 or 2008. Just loaded with pears, apples, and lime this felt and tasted young. Nice depth, great concentration - a delicious bottle.

  • 2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Showed really really well. Didn't have the big time sulphur that I've tasted on other 2004 Leflaive, and instead you could really taste the delicious citrus and mineral tones. Had the alluring flinty notes that I adore in certain white burgundies along with the perfect dollop of oakiness. Great showing.

  • 2014 Sine Qua Non Gallinita 88 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

My first SQN rose and I enjoyed it far more than I would have thought. First of all, this was labeled as 15.9%, but it felt about 3% lower - all of us were shocked at the ABV given how the wine tasted. The fruit was pretty rich and concentrated and it would have been better if there was more acidity.

  • 2014 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

Has a really nice nose of underbrush, cherries, and strawberries. Palate is silky but concentrated with a lot of cherries and roses - as expected the acidity was ripping. Drinking well right now, and it'll drink well for quite a while.

  • 2005 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

The last couple of these that I tried took a lot of patience to appreciate. This one had been opened for a while and I think that really helped. Definitely felt a lot more accessible. Bright red fruits, some pepper, underbrush, & roses filled the nose while the palate showcased cranberries and roses. Neatly structured, this will have a very long life ahead of it.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

I know that Rousseau's Charmes isn't one of their highest regarded bottlings, but I sure love them. I've had the 2008 a couple times, and a couple vintages from the early 2008s and they always show so nicely. No exception here. Exotic aromas of spices and cherries. The palate was in a great spot showing lots of concentrated red fruits along with some really nice undertones of spice and earth. Wasn't the most complex wine, but oh so satisfying.

  • 2009 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

This one kinda got lost in the other wines from the evening. Had dark and concentrated berry fruit throughout with some nice touches of floral notes and spice. A nice wine.

  • 1996 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

It's been a while since I tried this vintage. The fruit tasted a bit odd to me on this one. Maybe a touch of heat damage? Dunno really.

  • 2001 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Showed very nicely. Fruit was deep and dense - mostly dark berries, earth, smoke, & tar. Masculine. Drank this alongside the 1990 Beaucastel and the Beau easily outclassed this wine purely on its balance and elegance. This is a 6'10 power forward, and the Beaucastel is a 6'3 point guard.

  • 1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

It's been almost 6 years since I last had this wine and it's still a showstopper. Beautifully aromas of spicy red fruit, silky floral notes, and damp earth. The wine seemed to be made from silk. Wonderful composition that blended the exotic fruits of the vintage with the rustic notes that Beaucastel is so well known for. The complete package in CdP.

  • 1990 La Dame de Montrose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

I tasted this double blind at first, and the fruit was so red and juicy I thought it was a Burgundy. Maybe something from 2002? A subsequent glass (still double blind) had some more BDX-like characteristics - more smoky earth, fruit seemed a bit darker, etc. I've had the 1990 Montrose once or twice and the concentration was always the big thing about it and this had it, too. Lots and lots of red fruits, less of the Montrose funk and more of the Montrose fruit. Very nice!

  • 1987 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Had nice aromas of cherries, dark spices, blackberries, & earth. Had a lot of bell pepper on the nose, too. The palate was feminine and airy, but with good concentration of flavor. Lots of berries, earth, green beans/bell pepper, & earth. Love these older Mondavi Reserves. This was a great example.

  • 2002 Harlan Estate The Maiden 85 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

In a lineup of diverse wine, this was one of the least exciting. Great vintage, lots of pedigree, but for my tastes, it was just a bit boring. Warm oaky black fruits dominated the wine and while it had nice balance, the taste just wasn't in my wheelhouse. Oh well.
