Introduction

Dinner at a NYC Steak house with all Washington State wines. 10 people.

1 White, 6 Reds. All different producers. All the wines were opened in the restaurant and they sat open for 45 minutes before we poured the first one. We generally had 2 wines at once, and it took about 90 minutes to get to the last wine.

We had in order...2013 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Blanc, 2012 Soos Creek Celebrating the Growers, 2012 Avennia Sestina, 2009 Rockwell Brown Red Mountain, 2008 Quilceda Creek Palengat Red Wine, 2012 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2012 Figgins Estate Red Wine.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2013 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc 95 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

This was a huge hit with my wine group. None of us had ever had it before. Dry, with a pleasing acidity, it had citrus and floral notes. Loved the way the Semillon tamed the Sauvignon Blanc. It had a much bigger body than straight Sauvignon Blancs have.

  • 2012 Avennia Sestina 93 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

My first bottle from a group of 6 that I purchased on a salesman's recommendation. Glad I got it! This really evolved (in the glass) over the course of the evening. Some hints of oak, black fruit and maybe some lead pencil. This was a huge hit with my wine group.

  • 2012 Soos Creek Celebrating The Growers 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

A big surprise for my wine group. I may have been the only one familiar with Soos Creek, but everyone loved it. And for the price, a QPR winner.

  • 2009 Rockwell Brown Red Mountain 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

After reading about this in a Garagiste sales pitch, I took a flyer and bought 4 bottles. No where near as good as the Quilceda Creek that followed it. But very tasty! My entire group enjoyed it, and at the price I paid, it was gold! None of us had ever heard of it and we all enjoyed it. I don't know if there is any left in the market place, but if there is, and you can get it for under $25, buy it.

  • 2008 Quilceda Creek Palengat Red Wine 96 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

Our WOTN. Even better than my previous bottle. Long finish. Complex nose.

  • 2012 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon Flawed

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

CORKED! So disappointing! My first of 9 bottles. I had the 2010 last year and loved it, so I had really high hopes for this bottle. Hopefully, the other bottles will be fine. Opened it with my wine group for a Washington State wine night. One of the comments was "for a corked wine, its really quite drinkable". Which may tell me what could have been. But really after a sip or two, no one wanted to drink it.

Not the WOTN, but close. My group really enjoyed this. A lot going on here. I have to believe it will be even better in a year or two.

Closing

The WOTN was the 2008 Quilceda Creek Palengat Red Wine. A few others were just a hair behind the QC. The white wine, Delittle Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc was a huge hit, and on another night, could have been the favorite.
