Flight 1 - Welcome Champagnes (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - A couple of rosés (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - A single pinot (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Some syrahs (4 Notes)

  • 2005 DuMOL Syrah Russian River Valley 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Full-bodied, big fruit. Typical big CA syrah. A bit too monolithic to be great, but opened up nicely in the glass.

  • 2004 Denner Syrah 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Some heat on the nose. Big, pure, dark fruit. Initially not yielding much else, but after 15-20 min in the glass came into balance and showed a nice finish. I've liked this wine more in the past - drink them young?

  • 2003 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Smoky nose. Very tight - not yielding much upon opening but got better and better. Would probably have benefitted from decanting. Nicely balanced, pure fruit breaks throut the tannins. This may be great with more bottle age.

  • 1995 Sine Qua Non The Other Hand 92 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

Some barnyard on the nose and throwing some heat. The fruit has started to fade but what's still holding up is beautiful. Drink up.

Flight 5 - Cab-based (1 of 2) (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Col Solare 88 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Oak and heat on the nose. Drying tannins initially overwhelming the fruit. Improved some in the glass, but overall a disappointment for the money.

  • 1997 David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1147 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Medium bodied, dark red. Complex nose. Well integrated oak and the fruit is beginning to show some secondary characteristics. A bit thin on the finish. Others said this bottle wasn't as good as this wine usually is.

Flight 6 - Cab-based (2 of 2) (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Gemstone G 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

Phenomenal nose - I could sit and sniff this wine all night. Beautiful fruit in great balance, but the palate and finish (while very good) could not quite match the nose. Impressive effort - and this wine is open for business.

  • 2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Tight and tannic - needs time. Already showing some beautiful fruit. Some heat on the finish. Will be interesting to try this again in 5-10 years - this may be a great wine in the making.

  • 2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Medium-bodied. Ok - typical Napa cab. Lacking complexity.

Flight 7 - Dessert (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château d'Yquem 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Wow, this is the real deal! Classic Yquem - a huge step up from the '02. Showing better than when I had it last month.
