Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2001 Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very light, clear, yet rather viscous; cherry red to start, going to garnet with time in the glass. On nose, moderately intense; very clean and elegant; delicate berries and flowers. On palate, also moderately intense and persistent, with flavours of fruit, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco; high level of smooth tannins; high acidity; high alcohol, but not hot (label =14%); did not improve with time in the glass. On the traditional side of the spectrum; expressive and elegant, nicely balanced, competently made but not fascinating. €37.

  • 2001 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Torriglione 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Purplish-red, thicker, denser, viscous. On nose, very intense with clean earth, some fruit, and minerality. On palate, very intense and persistent; high alcohol (label=14.5%), high and gripping tannins, high acidity. Concentrated, rich, full bodied, long, complex. Obviously made with outstanding grapes. Drinking beautifully now but has a long life ahead. Absolutely great. €140. Tasted five months ago, and already it has developed.

  • 2001 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Moderate intensity with aromas and flavours of earth, minerals, roasted coffee, brambles, no fruit; evolved beautifully in the glass during 2-hr tasting, with some fruitiness emerging. On palate, moderate in intensity and persistence, with no fruit but astonishing minerality (graphite); high acidity, high alcohol (but seems slightly lower than 1&2), high/astringent tannins (both grape and from 24 m in new barrique). Complex with a long finish. Way too young to drink now; would love to try in about five years. Only 4,000 bottles made. €140.

  • 2001 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red, viscous. Notes of licorice, earth, minerals and some slight blackcurrant-like fruitiness in the background. On palate, intense flavours and textures; high alcohol, high/astringent tannins, moderate acidity. Full bodied, rich, concentrated, with moderate complexity, but a little short in the finish. Did not develop in the glass with time and air. €70.

  • 2001 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Gancia 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Ruby red, not as viscous (as the others). Moderate intensity on nose with spices, fruit and flowers. Something different from the others on the palate too; complex fruits and integrated but evident oak; high tannins, firm and slightly astringent; high acidity and alcohol. Nicely balanced, medium body, long, complex, fascinating (but at this point in the tasting I can't reason it out). Winemaking: 6 day maceration; 23 m barrique. Only 4,000 bottles made. Outstanding QPR €39.

  • 2001 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Outstanding nose, very complex. On palate, finally the roses (!) along with tobacco, vanilla, cocoa and evident oak (20 m in tonneaux with 30% new); high tannins, moderate acidity, moderate alcohol (although label says 14.5%, as it does for all except #1). Very long and complex, reaching the mid-palate and beyond. Drinking well now, but will improve for years to come.
