Introduction

An evening where the idea was to taste some wines that goes well with BBQ

Flight 1 - Champagnes (2 Notes)

Couple of Champagnes to clear the taste buds.

  • 1990 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Cuvée Creation

    France, Champagne

My first impression is this is an older champagne.A little subdued in the nose but some leaven, apple and sherry showing. The mousse is fine and not particularly heavy at all. Aftertaste has some tickling acid.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Substance

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Lovely fresh wonderful floral nose shows. The mousse is more dense than Vilmar. It kind of plays on the tongue and seemingly not giving all it got. A bit closed? I like this wine, but the others that tried this before told me that this was an unusual showing for a Substance.

Flight 2 - BBQ wines (9 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

OUCH what do we have here. Absolutely stunning nose, very young and fresh. Im fooled and not moving much back in years here to begin with. Very elegant yet not feminine. Im ruling out St. Estephe and Margaux thinking Paulliac, definately left bank. Claus is saying its not Paulliac and my guess goes out to LP 90. This wine is incredible. Not a BBQ wine in my book, but stunning beauty, very precise and elegant. Still lots of future ahead. Aftertaste just continues and continues. WOTN for me.

  • 2000 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

What a shame for this lovely wine to follow LP 90. Thats not justice. Young wine with nice freshness to it yet some alcohol showing in the nose.Taste very nice, good edge and structure and decent acidity. I taste sweet plums. Overall really like this wine.

  • 2002 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

My own wine. First try for me also. Its a bit wild, with animal, wild fresh berries and cassis. I like the freshness here and actually find the wine rather elegant and pure and not very heavy as some of the others found it. Amazingly no one thought of this as a Cab Sau wine but I did hear Pinot mentioned several times.

  • 1995 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

At this point I start to think about how fresh and well stored most of the evenings wines show. Its clear that people here care for their wines. Anyway back to the wine. I am not in Italy at all. My notebook says that we are on a plane to Nice and in a rental car up to Rhone somewhere drinking some Neuf... haha fooled big time. Because of the alcohol I thought 03 Neuf and thats prob the problem with this wine that the alcohol was quite dominant. Yet there was herbal notes and sweetness also. Not too bad.

  • 2003 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Spootswoode 03.. ouch.. very young, tons of alcohol and warmth showing. Need structure, need freshness, need edge, need precision. And where is the fruit? I own this wine myself but starting to wonder if this will ever come around.

  • 2001 La Corte Ré

    Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT

Short notes here though I really liked this wine. Must have lost focus. My notes read fresh, powerful tannins and a great structure. Great QPR. A fine wine that I would like to revisit.

  • 2000 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

At a total loss here. People around the table start to mention old Barolo in which I have very little experience so I just go with the flow and listen to what they say. My own notes only states something with age and a backstructure with lots of acidity but no idea what we are drinking. Now here comes the surpise. Bonneau 2000 Neuf. NO way. I had this wine couple of months ago and there is nothing in this wine that remotely resembles what I tried. An off bottle in some sorts for sure. Its like it aged beyond recognition overnight.

  • NV Tabarrini Montefalco Rosso Il Generoso

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso

A N.V. wine with 25 pct Sangiovese 2001 aged 4 years in barrigue, 25 pct Merlot and 25 pct Cab Sau 2003 aged 2 years in barrigue and finally 25 pct Sagrantino 2004 aged 1 year in barrigue. Decanted for about 3 hours and still extremely powerful, lots of tannins yet with nice layers of fruit underneath. If it all comes together this is gonna be very nice. For now very very young. The aftertaste was very delicious and long.

  • 2003 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M.

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Now here is a BBQ wine monster. Crash bang bang and I felt like I got hit by a train. Massive power, mature dark berries and white peper. Definately overseas in expression. Good but too much of everything. Its like one of those wines where you get tired after two glasses and feel like a glass of water.

Closing

From where I stand this is not a good theme when it comes to a bigger tasting. The diversity of possible wines is be too big and you kind of loose focus tasting these wines blind. Too many regions. It was more like a wine battle.
