Flight 1 - Sauvignon Blanc (from anywhere) (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Powerful flinty nose, with super tart citric acid, like crushed lemon or green apple jolly rancher. Green apple on the palate, citric, nice smooth mouthfeel, turning intensely stoney on the finish, which goes on for days. An excellent wine, and the only one in the tasting i wanted to drink a lot more of. My 1/3, group's 3/3. (Tasted blind)

  • 2005 Domaine Etienne Daulny Sancerre

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Light petrol, apple sauce on nose. Initially quite round in the mouth, almost sweet, not promising. Midpalate comes through with some impressive minerality. Good, but not as chiseled as i'd like it to be, and perhaps too sweet. My 2/3, group's 1/3. (Tasted blind)

  • 2006 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Huge nose of uber-concentrated grapefruit, kiwi, almost candied. On the palate this is like drinking a glass of grapefruit juice. So concentrated it's distracting. I like grapefruit juice so it's not offensive, but i do find it distracting and wouldn't want to pair it with food. My 3/3, group's 2/3. (Tasted blind)

Flight 2 - Syrah (from California) (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Novy Family Wines Syrah Sonoma County

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Nice nose that suggests slight age: red fruits, tobacco, jammy raspberry or cherry liqueur. Medium bodied, with an explosively sweet, fruity palate of lush red fruits, turning to vanilla ice cream on the finish. Suggestion of heat. Good for the style, i just don't like the style. My 1/3, group's 2/3. (Tasted blind)

  • 2003 Piedrasassi Syrah

    USA, California, Central Coast

Very dark, nearly black in color. Dark, superripe jammy nose. Scorched earth, black raspberry jam, slight raisin on the palate. Sweet, but not sugary. This is one of those higher alcohol "dry port" styled wines with just an overwhelming level of dry extract. Moderately tannic, but you'd never know it due to the insane concentration. Not my bag, but someone here will love this. My 2/3, group's 1/2. (Tasted blind)

  • 2003 Cameron Hughes Syrah Lot 9 Paso Robles Flawed

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Slightly vinegary nose. Sweet red fruits, pretty simple. Seems to have a little age. A weird, unpleasant note on the finish. I thought this was flawed. My and the group's 3/3. (Tasted blind)
