Echezeaux Offline

An excellent selection assembled and rganised into this offline by David Pope.

From my perspective the of the night was the 96 Engel. Second for drinking now the 67 DRC and for cellaring, the 99 A-F Gros. Very honourable mentions too for the 88 Jayer-Gilles, the 2000 Arnoux and the 01 Engel.

  Slightly dull smokey garnet. Sweet fruit nose with hints of tawny port. Quite clean. Pinot. Fades quickly. (**)

  Duller, cloudier, browner. Interesting nose. Quite spicy. Decent acidity. Still a nice drink here. (*)*1/2

  Mid garnet. Lovely nose. Spicy fruit. Good fruit, spice, lovely texture, extra weight and dimension. Fragrant. This is lovely. ****1/2

  Slightly cloudy. Interesting nose, spicy, quite exotic. Almost tastes as if there s a bit of secondary fermentation. ***

  Similar colour to the 1997. Slightly more taut and full. Hmm, seem to have drunk this before thinking about notes so it can't have been too bad! ***1/2

  Similar sweet slightly 'Frazzles' bacon notes to the nose as the 98 to start with, then a lovely light fruit nose. Lovely fruit, still quite tight. Very young. Obvious GC quality here. Should be lovely. ****

  Similar nose to the 99 - sweet fruit and 'Frazzles' as the 99, then slightly more giving. Some varnish developing on the nose. Again, nice fruit, hints of caramel. beter of the two with food at the moment but not as good a wine as the 99. ***1/2

  Far fuller colour, deep ruby to slightly purple still. Huge legs. Spicy nose. Nice structure, taut, good fruit, needs another 5 to 10 years to peak. Very impressive and very complete. Excellent. *****

  Huge oaky nose. Some fruit eveident with more air. Big wine, very oaky with good almost peppery fruit. It isn't subtle, but it's quite good. ***1/2
