G SQUARED, Scott Manlin, Marc Lazar and others brought together a group of 9 wine nuts for the ultimate pilgrimage, a trip to Bern's in Tampa, FL. This was my virgin trip, and I can see why it is such an institution.
By the way, at the time we visited we were asked to stay "hush" and not mention the wines in association with Bern's on CellarTracker or wine boards. Much kerfuffle and debate later ensued when Dr. Jay Miller from the Wine Advocate visited and proudly trumpeted the list of wines consumed by he and his fellow diners. Jay recently cleared this up by speaking with the owner, and we are now indeed allowed to mention Bern's. So I have updated this write-up to be less mysterious.
A delightful Riesling got us going, and a mature La Mouline floated around the table, a "cocktail hour" purchase by a subset of the group.
We kicked off the evening with a pair of Bordeaux magnums, wow what a treat!
The fireworks really started up when we hit the Burgundy. A little uneven, but oh that Mongeard-Mugneret was unreal!
We finished up with some Bordeaux, adding the 1961 Lynch Bages as a final nightcap.
Wow what a night!
