Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Disgorged 10/2007. Light golden yellow color. Delicious nose of grape, green and red apples, freshly baked ryebread and a fragile vanila frame. More green apples and grape in the mouth, very tight and for the moment leaving only little room for the fragile notes of yeast and ryebread. A sweet note of vanila softens the finish just a little bit. The bubbles hangs long on the palate, and together with the vanila note on the finish leaves a creamy note of caramel just at the end. Very lively acidity and good lenght. Cellar it for a while, it is too tight at the moment.

  • 2005 Elderton Shiraz Nuriootpa 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Black center with a purple rim. Powerfull and intense nose with very ripe and warm dark fruit, black berries, blue berries and dark plums, some roasted oak and freshly grinded coffee. Similarly a powerhouse of dark fruit on the palate, with some sweet (English) licorise and coffee on the midpalate and finish. Good length, marked by the heat of the alcohol on the finish, but not over-powering. There is a warmth and sweetness from bouquet over the the palate to the finish in the mouth.

  • 2000 Kanonkop Pinotage Cape Winemakers Guild 88 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

Dark red color with a brick red hue. Very nice, rustic bouquet with notes of animal, leather, cigar box and some sweet fruit. The nose is quite complex and nuanced, unfortunately the taste does not match it. Giving some red fruit first, but quick changing to tar, bitterness and a sour finish, a little like sour milk and cigar. Leaves me with an unclean impression.

  • 1995 Clos Fourtet 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Mature looking brownish color with a orange rim. Mature Bordeaux nose, with cherry, strawberry, nail polish and some tomato plant. The nose is matched over the palate, with notes of strawberry, cherry and a vegetable feel. Some leather on the good long finish, and a great balance. Very right-bank Bordeaux.

  • 1999 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Finca Dofí 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Dark red color with a brick red rim. The nose really reminds me of a bowl of soured milk with wild berries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and some dark plum. Sweet fruit, yet refined, cool and elegant. On the palate it shows similar wild berries and a note of dried fruit, raisin. The midpalate gives some plum and licorise as well, before the dark chocolate on the finish. Powerful tannins. The wine showed only slight signs of age, but the material is there for many more years.

  • 2004 Señorío de San Vicente Tempranillo Rioja San Vicente 92 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Black color with a thin dark red rim. Restrained nose with some dark fruit, bandage, iondine and chalk. Much more power in the mouth, lots of warmth, sweet fruit first, some bitter coffee and licorise on the midpalate. Clear notes of oak, but a dry finish with some heat from the alcohol and lively tannins. Easily drinkable, showing many nuances now.

  • 2003 Mas Morties Pic St. Loup Tombé du Ciel 88 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup

Dark red color with a brick red hue. Intense sweet aromas of strawberry, raisin, honey and a bit of prune. The nose is somewhat synthetic in the fruit notes. Similar fruit on the palate, strawberry and raspberry, first and the dried fruit at the end. Start very sweet but the finish is very dry, causing more confussion than pleasure. I would have prefered a more balanced profile, nonetheless this remained an interesting glass.

  • 2002 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 93 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia

Amber golden color. Very nice nose, with great nuances of apricot, pineapple, spices and brown sugar. More delicate and perfumed on the palate, hand lotion, soap, apricot and raisin. Very intense sweetness, but beautifully balance with a striking acidity. Great length and complexity.
