Introduction

This was my first off-line from the WLTV group. Excellent night with some great wines. The food at CDR was pretty good. The room though had to much food aromas that detracted from the wines.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1985 Château La Lagune 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Fully mature nose of apple, saddle leather, cedar, bright sweet red fruits and a slight roasted nut charactor. In the mouth the wine is a bit dusty and lacks any grip. A slightly rough wine with a short muted cedary finish. Not as good as the 82 or 90 but a decent example of fully mature bordeaux. Drink up.

  • 1983 Château Palmer 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Lighter in color than recent bottles. The palmer exhibited an intoxicating nose of grilled steak, lilac perfume, a slight mocha, and a very attractive underbrush character. In the mouth the wine was much less powerful than previous bottles. It was somewhat disjointed in the mouth with a short finish. When this wine is on it is one of the best of the vintage, sadly this bottle was not and I am finding more and more lack-luster bottles of the 83 palmer.

  • 1985 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Mature. Nose of creamy red fruit, sweet milk chocolate with a slight oak and mushroom sent. Oak and earthy in the mouth with a cherries and raspberries on the palate. The wine has no hard edges and was the smoothest so far of the night. After a while in the glass it took on a moldy wet basement character that was nice. Structurally the best so far.

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Darkest in color so far. Huge powerful nose of tobacco, chocolate, and dirt mixed with black and red summer fruits. Great balance and feel. Long fruity and cedary finish. This wine has a lot more upside and had years to go before it reaches its peak. Fabulous wine.

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Awesome! Even more rich than the lynch. Powerful tobacco leaves that were drenched in chocolate then dried and then chopped. Also coffee grounds, toast, and steak tartar served in a wood box. Richest and most seamless palate of all the wines. Great palate of plums and black currant with great balance. This was the best showing of 90 pichon baron I have had. Still a lot more room to grow. 96+

  • 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This was a treat and surprise of the night. Ripe fruity bouquet with a hint of tomato, coffee, chocolate, and typical graphite. Real powerful and dense. The wine then took on a dill character. Very seductive and while very ripe, this wine should be just as good as the 90 in years to come (although much different in style)

Closing

I thought the palmer did not live up. We also had bottles of the 86 and 90 las cases. Others at the table liked them. I did not. However the 89 lynch and 90 baron were great bottles and drinking amazingly well. The 2003 baron was an excellent wine and was glad to hgave tried it. It reperesents and excelent value.
