2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 90 Points

Not a huge nose. Hint of floral Roussanne. Nutty. Very clean on the pallate with high acidity. Dominated by the oak now and will hopefully improve. A little disappointing now.

2005 Domaine Chapoton Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d'Uchaux Geodaisia 90 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d'Uchaux
From the distinctly superior terroir of the Massif D'Uchaux, a distinctly superior blend, its constituents being Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, each adding an extra dimension to the aromatic and textural package. Honeysuckle and lime blossom dominate the nose, and on the palate there are hints of peach, nougat and hazelnut. Unoaked. Big and full of character. Easy drinking full of freshness and acidity. Really good VFM.

2005 Domaine du Colombier Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Gaby 84 Points

Closed on the nose. High in tannin and not particularly expressive. Muted by oak now.

2005 Domaine Coursodon St. Joseph Silice 91 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Nose dominated by spice and pepper. A real treat to the senses. Lost of delicate damson fruit and spice. Tannins are fine but there is still room for some aging.

2002 Robert Michel Cornas La Geynale 89 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Very elegant wine from a disappointing year. Not hugely expressive for a Cornas but highly drinkable. Ready for drinking now. Subtle sweetness from damson and strawberry fruit. A hint of spice. Tannins well balanced.

2004 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie 90 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Quite closed on the nose with just a hint of the viognier violets. Just about drinkable now but quite closed and oak dominated. Medium tannins. Best left for another 2-5 years.

2004 Domaine du Colombier Hermitage 95 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
My wine of the night. Big nose of pepper and spice. Rich, concentrated and delicious. Lots of red and black fruit, but elegant. Tannins are lovely and crunchy giving the wine a great grip and balance.

2005 Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône 90 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
VFM wine of the night. Excellent wine for under £9. Hugely expressive. Big fruit. Surprising depth and medium finish. Best drunk now or in next three years.

2004 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape 88 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Quite closed on the nose with hints of plums and spice. I found this a litlle bland and closed on the pallate and expected much more spice and interest. Medium tannin. Not bad and should improve. A little closed now.
