Flight 1 - Starter Bubbly (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Chardonnay (3 Notes)

Hong Kong style Crab griddle cake, lemon chili aioli

  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 91 Points

Notes of orange blossoms, mango, nectarines, and lemon zest. Great acidity and in a really good place right now.

  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

The Lauren is usually my favorite of the Aubert line-up. However, while still outstanding, this particular wine did not match my previous experiences with it. Muted aromas of pears and beeswax. Smooth and sleek on the palate with notes of poached pears, candied lemon, and crushed minerals. The finish tapers off sooner than one would like.

  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Reuling Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

This wine seemed to differ the most from the previous two. Notes of butterscotch, toffee, and mixed nuts. The fruit seems to have faded quite a bit, while the oak is still very much present and unintegrated. 88-89 points.

Flight 3 - Pinot Noir (traditional) (3 Notes)

Atlantic Salmon, wasabi potatoes, baby bok choy, soy shiitake mushrooms

  • 2004 Aston Pinot Noir Experimental Lot 85 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

An unusual wine. Notes of spearmint, leather, and black cherry. Slightly vegetal on the palate with some heat on the finish.

  • 2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Sonatera Vineyard 82 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

A very Burgundian wine, but not necessarily in a good way. Dank aromas of earth, stem, and (with air) roses followed by faded cranberry fruit, mushrooms, and forest floor. Not really my cup of tea.

  • 2004 Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

A really lovely Pinot that easily won the flight and even managed to become my WOTN. Gorgeous nose of brown sugar, cinnamon, and cherry pie filling. Lithe on the palate with sexy layers of red and black fruits. This is what Pinot is all about!

Flight 4 - Pinot Noir (modern) (3 Notes)

Boneless Pork rib rack chop, cremini mushrooms, soft polenta, white truffle essence

  • 2004 Alcina Cellars Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard 86 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Spicy aromas of gingerbread and spearmint. A burst of ripe cherries on the palate, but seemed a bit stewy from the midpalate on.

  • 2004 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

One of the better Pinots of the evening. Rich notes of black raspberries, black cherries, tree bark, and brown spices. Broad on the palate and very satisfying.

  • 2004 MacPhail Pinot Noir Pratt Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

I'm glad I have some of this in my cellar as I thought it was a terrific wine (even though it was served too warm). Black raspberries and baking spices on the nose followed by a complex and balanced palate of black cherries, raspberries, and cola. Generous finish with a good lift of acidity. My #2 WOTN.

Flight 5 - Syrah (3 Notes)

London Sirloin, parmesan mashed potatoes, baby carrots, pesto

  • 2004 Peay Vineyards Syrah Les Titans 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Earthy aromas of black olives and loam. Refined on the palate with delicate notes of cranberries, red plums, and white pepper. The most food-friendly Syrah of the flight. 90-91 points.

  • 2004 Radio-Coteau Syrah Cherry Camp 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Dusty nose of charcoal, black olives, dark chocolate, and plums. Meaty on the palate and very reminiscent of an old world Syrah. A touch of heat on the finish.

  • 2004 Pax Syrah The Emerald Pool Alder Springs Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County

A difficult wine to judge against the others as this wine did not fit into the perimeters of the tasting. A monster of a wine with loads of bacon fat, blueberries, volcanic soil, and mixed peppercorns. Rich and very structured and way too young to drink at this juncture.

Flight 6 - Dessert (3 Notes)

Warm flourless Chocolate Torte, toasted almond gelato
