Introduction

"Spend the kitty" night tonight so expecting some excellent wines.

Flight 1 - Scarborough 05 Chadonnay oak variation comparison.

Excellent white braket showing 4 different bottles of the Scarborough 05 Chardonnay. Each bottle had undergone different oak treatment so it was very interesting to compare the affects of each oak variation (new, old, malo, non-malo).

Flight 2 - Bordeaux and Aussie comparison. (6 Notes)

Red bracket was where the cash was spent. 6 wines with 4 being Bordeaux and 2 being Aussie's to compare with. Have to say, the 97 Pyrus stood up VERY well against the Bordeaux. Favourites other than the Pyrus would have been the Figeac and the Ducru-Beaucaillou.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deep purple on the rim with a decent shine in the glass. Black to blood red is hue. HUGE and dry. Almost sand-papery on the palette. Showing abit of age on the nose, but not overly in the palette - decent cellaring potential. Blackcurrents and blueberries. Rating Very Good.

  • 1999 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Lots of caramel and chocolate on the nose, very intoxicating. Slight brown tinge on the rim. Decent legs in the glass. Huge fruit, but a lighter lift mid-palette. Fairly long with the chocolate and mint flowing through the palette. Soft tannin structure abit of a surprise.

  • 1997 Lindeman's Pyrus

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Classical berry nose. Distinctive new-world cabernet style. Perhaps a little closed initially but really opened up with some time in the glass. Funky and jammy on the palette with lots of strawberries and new oak. Low acid levels. Rated very very good. An excellent Pyrus vintage.

  • 1999 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Big and black. All the fruit hits in the mid-palette. Defintive old world style. Unfortunately, very bretty and a touch flabby. Perhaps going through abit of a dump phase at the moment. Didn't rate very well.

  • 1999 Château Bellerose Figeac

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion

Very odd nose. Big and super dry with nice full fruit flavours. Structure hits you all up front with chocolate and boiled lollies. Rated good-very good.

  • 2001 Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

All spice and fruit. Excellent mid-palette tang of orange with lots of new oak. Infact, perhaps abit much new oak as it's a touch heavy on the resin flavours. Quite enjoyed it actually - guess you have to like that oaky, overcooked style. Will compare well to other MR cabs.
