Introduction

Last friday 4 members of Uncorked DK and a guest got together for a relaxed yet ambitious BYO tasting at Søllerød Kro. In my opinion Søllerød Kro is one of the very best places to eat in Denmark (better than famed NOMA) and it provided a good setting. Unfortunately the service was a bit arrogant, but it did not subtract from the overall experience of great food and extraordinary wines.

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 Note)

  • 1985 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé 97 Points

    France, Champagne

Light peach. Fine and persistent mousse. Delicious nose of raspberries, sour redcurrants, coconut soap and flowers. In the mouth there is more raspberries, bisquits, and with some air sherry and dried orange peel notes. Very intense and very well balanced. One of the top 3 champagnes that I've had.

Flight 2 - Chablis (1 Note)

  • 1996 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Yellow. Intense nose with butter, petrol, licorice and gunpowder. Very buttery and fat with a relatively low acid. A bit short and with too little fruit. With air a classic 96 lemony acidity emerges and subtracts from the pleasure.

Flight 3 - Two very different chardonnays (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Light yellow. Extremely complex nose of black tea, dried red berries, dried rose leaves, coconut soap and more. Not like any other Chardonnay nose that I've ever had. At first a bit short and disappointing in mouth compared to the aromatics, but with a bit of time in the glass it fills out and has balance, poise and length. A great wine and great terroir.

  • 2003 Kistler Chardonnay Cuvée Cathleen 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Light yellow. Delicious buttery nose, gunpowder and some minerals. Very spicy and intense in mouth showing a delicious licorice-infused minerality and plenty of toast. In spite of the fatness and spicyness there is good restraint. Works from A to Z, but does lack just a bit of complexity.

Flight 4 - DRCs (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Dark pinot color. Intense nose of red berries, chocolate, marzipane, herbs and licorice - spicy, but a bit hot. Lots of cherries in mouth, but not yet intergrated. Delicious and a powerful pinot, but not all together and not really showing the La Tache terroir. A bit disappointing compared to the other La Taches that I've had (96 and 01). Definitely needs more time.

  • 1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Dark pinot color, looks pretty young. Delicious and sexy nose of black spicy fruit and perfumed wild strawberries. In mouth it is really smooth and soft with satin-like tannins and some salty minerality lurking behind the sexy fruit. Incredibly sexy and well-aged. Did I mention sexy..?

Flight 5 - Musigny (1 Note)

  • 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Medium clear red, delicious nose of creamy and perfumed red cherries - cherry essence and hints of licorice. Very round, yet very primary and essence like fruit. Good length, but definitely requires time to gain complexity.

Flight 6 - Syrah galore (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Alban Vineyards Syrah Lorraine 94 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

Black as ink. Very intense nose of cherry essence and pine forrest - reminded us of Chave Hermitage 2003 (but not THAT intense...) Salty licorice, cherry licqeur and pine needles. A wine on steroids. Does maintain some cool and balance and is a pleasure to drink.

  • 1998 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red with light rim. Nice dark berries and milky chocolate on the nose. Well balanced with sweet fruit and intense spices. Shows a good deal of acid and was most likely somewhat closed. Gained in intensity and complexity with time in the glass.

  • 1990 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red, light rim. Dark spicy and sweet berries, coffee, loads of tobacco and some cedar tree. Very intense with a Bordeaux like structure and very long.

Flight 7 - Chateauneuf-du-Pape (2 Notes)

Flight 8 - Bordeaux First Growth (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red. Intriguing nose of tobacco, mint, caramel, sour milk and some saltiness from the wood. In the mouth there is lots of dark spicy fruit and great intensity. Give it time.

  • 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red. Nose of dark berries, plenty of cedar and oak. In the mouth it is young and fresh with more dark fruit and a caramellike texture. Very delicious and frightingly young. Next to the 2001 Latur it was not possible to tell which were the oldest.

Flight 9 - Riesling magic (1 Note)

Closing

This is one of those nights where we tasted some legendary wines which we will remember always, but we did not give out the magic 100 points or come really close. In fact many of the wines seemed very young and tight and best performance were in general given by the oldest wines. Irrespective of points the wines that will stay in the back of my head for a long time to come is 85 Cristal Rose, 90 DRC RSV, 90 Landonne and 82 Mouton.
