Summer Pavillion @ the Ritz
Tasted Monday, November 24, 2008 by Alex H with 716 views
My first wine dinner by the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Singapore. A fine way to end a hectic monday at work. Lovely company and a whole range of very good burgs. As the scores would say, this was no ordinary wine dinner for me.
Suprisingly dark red for a burg. Extracted dark cherries and berries with smoky nuances. Hints of rusty nails and hot zinc roof surface. Could pass off as a left bank. Rigidly structured like an iron glove. Although it does have fruits to complement, it seems to be losing its senses and felt confused.

Sharp cherries and cherry coke framed by ferrous minerality. Some flowers too. Nice cherries on the body with a bitter root finish.

A very lovely perfumed leroy nose of stewed cherries, dates, plums and hawthorne berries dusted with a handful of dried earth. Lovely sweet package of fresh cherries, slightly ferrous and posesses good elegant structure to keep it alive. Delicious.

Lovely floral expression that makes one dream of sweet meadow fields filled with little cherries painted like little lambs prancing about dainty sweet little girls that are dancing around in circles.

Beautifully aged. Wonderful perfumed nose of flowers, stewed hawthorne berries, dates and showing hints of savory meatiness. Beautiful, nice and elegantly presented with a luscious and seductive mouthfeel. Not pretentious. Mmmmm....

Senses searing aromas of hot cherries and dried mandarins lifted by some crayola brambles. Citrus lifted stew of cherries , dates and hawthorne flakes. Very lively and dances all the way down to the stomach. Mouthwatering and amazing wine.

As with quite a few others, I had scored this wine (without knowing the decision of the tasting panel at the table) the highest points of the night. An absolutely beautiful nose which once again reminded me of Leroy. Stewed cherries, dates and plums uniquely lifted by just the slightest touch of menthol and a whiff of cigarette ash. Wow! Similar expressions on the palate but with just a sliver of dried shrivelled mandarins and the best of aged sweet cherries. Paints a picture of an alluring and charming lady in the prime of her youth. She is sweet and elegant. The school belle.

Sweet candy but mostly nail varnish driven. Wet wood and damp earth with sandalwood. Primary cherries dominate.

Dark aura of soy and earth with more earth-buried cherries with wild nuances of leather. Intense but still elegant dark cherries peppered with crayola.A nicely extracted effort and just needs more time to come together.

Overpowering strong attack on the nose of almond paste with underlying cherries and earth.Brambly crayola laced cherries that slowly showed more gentle light red berries. The earthy shows up with nice barkish undertones.

The most farty wine of the night with barnyard and leather dominating. Dark cherries and some plums provide amazing depth and lovely length. This is a keeper. An impressionable effort.

White flowers and white stonefruits come to the fore but detected hints of almost soy saucynesss. Lovely grippy acidity complementing a lemon buttery mouthfeel.

Citrus and pungent floral scents. Slight butteriness and green lemons and lime providing mouthwatering acidity. Sharp and bright. Interesting saltiness.

2004 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Rich bread and butter pudding with boldful roasted almonds and cooked shellfish. Wow! This is a grande dame! Majestic scenes of grandeur and extravagance fills the mind. I see a golden palace with a great hall decorated with golden trimmings and adorned by wonderful paintings of summer gardens in full bloom. Lying in the middle is a long golden-gilded table filled with golden plates of golden apples and brown-crusted apple crumble.

2006 Roux Père & Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Cortons Blanc 85 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
An almost pickled nose infused with sweet summer frangipanis. Balanced and restrained in its approach. I get nice lemons and a puckering acidity with good length.

2006 Alain Geoffroy Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy 86 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
I get mostly chinese snow pears and white grapefruits. This is a Mr / Mrs Nice wine. Everything about it is in nice proportions. Just nice acid, just nice on the sweetness, nicely lightly toasty almond and nice length with some nice hints of richness. Not overindulgent but not understated either. Nice.

2006 Roux Père & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles 84 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
I get an odd feeling with this wine. Sappy lemons and a richness about it with bitter almonds coming through as well. Feels like the classmate that is not really the nerd nor the geek but takes part in group banters sometimes. However, its difficult to stay on a conversation when its one to one. Needs some effort and character to appreciate.

2006 Roux Père & Fils Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Poruzots 83 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Slightly tamed on aromatics with mostly one dimensional expression of butter lemons. On the palate, it is a different story with overindulgent richness of rich buttery lemon cream custard with too much cream and not enough lemons. Flashy with its assets.

2006 Jean-Philippe Fichet Meursault Le Tesson 82 Points

Slight baygon smells but the aromas are mostly playing a game of hide and seek. Very temperamental. Simple clean sunny lemons acidity This is okay.

2006 Roux Père & Fils Corton-Charlemagne 86 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Fresh lemons with whiffs of baygon. Rather grapey reminding me of grape seeds. Sweet florals. This has firm judicious acidity with great expectations of toasty nuttiness developing. Has class and potential.

Full blown with its overnight apple core covered in lemon custard glazed with just a dash of nail varnish. Sappy lemons fruit done in a very elegant approach but just slightly waning away.

2006 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 83 Points

Sweet custard flowers and sweet pears with mineral backing. Big with good acidity. However, does feels commercially driven and industrious in approach.

Exotic nose of baygon and cockroach! amidst nutty almonds and cashews. Nice cooked lemons with some nail varnish kick. Has power and body but would do better with more elegance. All said, it is still a very good wine.
