Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1985 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Golden yellow color. Pineapple nose. Apple, fresh dough, lemon and lime. Possessing a deep chalky minerality. Good depth with an elegant finish with a slight tart apple component. The group as a whole thought it to be amazing and while I thought is was quite good it did not have the depth, elegance and grace of the 1988 we drank about a month ago.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Kistler Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard Parmelee-Hill 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Pale yellow color. Vanilla oak nose. Tastes of pear, lime and apple with a ton of new oak. Quite young. Needs time to integrate the oak but I'm not convinced it ever will fully integrate at least to my personal tastes. Rich with good depth and nice complexity.

  • 2005 Kongsgaard Chardonnay The Judge 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Golden yellow color. Fresh cantaloupe on the nose. Tastes of pear, lime and melon. Nice freshness and acidity. The oak is much better integrated compared to the regular Chardonnay of the same year. A massive, full bodied wine. Rich with some heat on the powerful finish. I'm not sure why this wine garners such high praise by the critics and the folks on CT. It seems to be very manipulated and over the top. I assume just not my cup of tea.

  • 2005 Kongsgaard Chardonnay

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Golden yellow color. Oaky nose. Tastes of apple and pear. It appears to be beaten to within an inch of it's life with way too much new oak. I'm surprised my tongue didn't have splinters in it after my first sip. Rich and overly alcoholic. A total contrast to the Judge of the same vintage. Over blown, over manipulated and over done. Over and out.

  • 2001 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Intoxicating nose of tropical fruits and flowers. Honey, lemon, pear, orange and peaches. Very light on its feet. Expansive mid palate with tremendous purity of fruit. Tremendous complexity and elegance. Impeccable balance. A finish that literally lasts for several minutes. A baby of a wine that will easily outlive me and possibly my offspring.
