Introduction

A thoroughly enjoyable potluck dinner with good frens. We had lots of meat dishes pairing nicely with a flight of 99 bords and a few special suprises.

Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Klipfel Riesling Cuvée Particulière 78 Points

    France, Alsace

Flowers and peaches. Slightly aromatic. Mostly lychees with dash of pineapple cocktail and a ringing of pear juice. Oily and weighty on the palate and might I add a tad bit flabby. Alright for daily drinking.

  • 1999 Château Haut-Brion Blanc 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Deep "brooding" aromas of butterscotch, freshly brewed coffee, toffee-covered nuts and all deeply infused with baked lemon pastry. Complex and multi-layered with a whole connundrum of flavours from white coffee, oyster shells and a basket of an assortment of white stonefruits. Long satisfying finish. This is the deepest flavoured white I have ever tasted but not OTT. Well balanced. A suprising wine.

Flight 2 - 99 Bords (6 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Grand Corbin Flawed

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Wet cardboard from beginning till end but does have underlying fruits that felt pretty lush if not for the cork taint.

  • 1999 Château Larmande 80 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Muted nose with acetone showing. Dark cherries with substantive mouthfeel but soft tannins. Not bad but directionless without distinctive style.

  • 1999 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Cigarette ash tainted, slightly floral perfumed, cherryish and very gently feminine. Ringing cherry fruit gently gliding on the palate with graceful turns and ballet-like movements. Not the most memorable of ducrus but this is as right bank as a left bank can get.

  • 1999 Château La Tour Haut-Brion 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Soft and light-footed in approach. Lots of secondary aromas of tobacco, cigar box with dried dusty notes. Light to medium body. Slight spice accentuates a mostly red currant fruit body. Approchable now and holds its own graceful stature in comparison with its more famous siblings.

  • 1999 Château d'Armailhac 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Roasted coffee poured into a small cedar box that used to hold cigars and a sprinkle of earth. Fleshy blackcurrant fruit that is amazingly gentle and succulent. However, its comparative - Pichon Baron made this usually hedonistic wine seem much more docile and gayish. This still has class and reminds me of white-wigged, white-faced french aristocrats in those Louis XIII movies.

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Stewed nose of meatiness, some green capsicum and lots of leather and hide. Beautiful, sexy and hedonistic. This has dense, plush, voluptuous dark fruits with toastiness and finishing with licourice and more leather. Oppulent, lovely and elegantly fat....oops, correction.. big -boned not fat. She is like the well-fed daughter of an aristocrat. Not exactly the most feminine of the lot but big to a certain extent can be beautiful.

Flight 3 - A Welcome Detour (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Smells like a liquer-soaked raisined fruit cake with nice touch of violets. Rather perfumed. Black fruits dominate with sprinkling of perpperiness and licourice. However, it livens up on the palate gradually with dancing cherry fruits and lively acidity. Long finish with strong lively tannins. Needs time to develop more interesting flavours.

  • 2006 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Poste 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Everyone was undoubtedly mersmerized by the beautifully scented nose of spa aromatherapy oils and interstingly some good quality baygon too! A concoction of lavendar, violets, incense, sandalwood, dried herbs oil and MORE! Gradually became more floral with a nice dark roast coffee beans lift. It was as wonderfully perfumed in the mouth as well. Luscious basketful of blackberries and cherries albeit glycerin glazed. Plump, smoky and like aroma oils poured over hot stones. Very well held together. A wonderful wine! This is a spa haven experience that brings much wellness to my soul.

  • 1999 Greenock Creek Shiraz Seven Acre 86 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Tasted over a day. My first impressions from the decanter was pretty blurry with not much showing from the wine except standardish top quality aussie shiraz. However, what struck me was when I retasted the next day with the following notes: Dark brooding black coffee roast, dark fruits and a handful of licourish spices. Not at all OTT but very distinctively aussie shiraz. Aged and already out in the open for a day, this still revealed a lot of vibrancy and youth. Longlasting flavours ring through till the finish. A gutsy showing.

Flight 4 - Sweets (1 Note)

  • 1990 Château Doisy-Daëne 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Sweet fresh apricots and pineapply nose nicely nuanced with toasty honeyed nuttiness and might I add an interesting mushroomy aroma. Still big on the palate with good botrytis on dried apricots and golden sultanas. Nicely lifted by orange peels as well.

Closing

My WOTN was Chat St Cosme! which has won me over to Gigondas. I need to get some of these wines. Of cos, there is my first ever Haut Brion! I think the 99 vintage is a good introduction for new world wine drinkers with its lower acidity and generally more approachable fruits and tannins.
