Introduction

Full MOT scoring - all wines decanted for 4 hours initially.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Van Loveren Pinotage Five's Reserve 82 Points

South Africa, Breede River Valley, Robertson

Dark red with a buttery nose and distinct yet laid back violet undertones. A shortish finish with a touch of metallic aftertaste (only slight). Nice medium tannins. I would have thought it should score higher at a 87?

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1989 Meerlust Merlot 89 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Bronze and coppery color with a light chalky terrior on the nose. Still good tannins and this was better than I expected. I thought it may have been too thin but this was very balanced and soft.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Jordan Winery (Jardin) Cobblers Hill 94 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Classic heavy chalk terrior for the Jordan estate. Green peppers on the nose and still one of my smooth favorites. Immediately drinkable. Retasted next day and beautifully smooth. This is smooth, full bodied yet not overpowering at all. (moved rating from 92 to 94)

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2006 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Very dark red with almost extreme tannins (I like tannins). I don't know that I have ever tasted such strong tannins. I don't remember the 05 having as much tannin as this. Surely this will allow it to age for many years. A very fruity cassis and berry nose makes it noticably a cabernet. Very full bodied too. I will retaste a day later. I had thought it would score a little higher so will see the second rating after further decanting.

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Harlan Estate The Maiden 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

An undertone of chalky terrior. Very dark red and sweetest of the flight -- dark fruit. This was decanted for 4 hours and needed more time. Improved over two hours and will retaste a day later. Keep and do not drink for a while. This can last for many, many years and I will try another bottle in 2011. Tasted next day, still immense tannins with dark chocolate - worthy of a 93.

I do not know what the blend is (searched the internet without success) but it seems to be heavily Cabernet based.
