April 2009 FWR Tasting | (53 page views) | | 4/29/2009 (FWR, Toronto, Canada) |
| | - 1999 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Chianti Rùfina Castello di Nipozzano Riserva Montesodi - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Rùfina
Dark ruby colour. Aromas of peach, vanilla, kirsch, plum, and oak. Full-bodied, lush, integrated tannins, but still showing some overt oak notes. Black cherries, black plums, and blackberry notes on the palate. Moderate-length finish, ~35s, with orange pekoe tea and black plum notes. Cellaring has been kind to this wine, as it has developed significantly more depth and complexity. That said, with few tertiary notes and unintegrated oak, I think a couple more years will result in an even better wine. Drink 2011+. (91 pts.)
- 2001 Il Palazzone Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Shut down pretty tightly right now, but does show some notes of tea, cherry, and plums. Decent length on the finish. Leave it in the cellar and revisit in 2012+. (90 pts.)
- 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Light-medium ruby colour. Crystal clear. Nose of kirsch, raspberry, currant, alcohol, herbes de Provence, brown sugar/molasses. Full-bodied, a little roasted, with prunes, raisins, raspberry coulis, and herbes de Provence. Long finish, ~45-50s, with more raspberries and raisins. The alcohol was as little more prevalent that I would have liked. I hope with more aging the alcohol is soaked up by the wine so it shows a bit better balance. This is a very big wine. (92 pts.)
- 2005 Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
Opaque purple/black colour. Aromas of green pepper and blackcurrant. Full-bodied, lush, with vanillan, blackcurrant, blackberry cassis, and alcohol. Moderate-long, spicy, black fruit finish. Nice. Drink now. (89 pts.)
- 2004 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Opaque ruby/black colour. Aromas of sambuca, crushed blackberries, vanilla/oak. Full-bodied, lush, with replays from nose. Nice finish. Nothing really stands out here, but it's definitely a very solid wine. Seems a little young. Drink 2011+. (92 pts.)
