Introduction

Today was all about exploring wines with food.

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 Note)

My first champagne. I liked it, but I need to explore this category much more over the next few years.

Flight 2 - Aromatic Whites (1 Note)

I love the aromatic whites, and this was no exception. Served with dim sum.

Flight 3 - Rhonish White (1 Note)

Served with bean soup. Not a huge fan of this wine.

Flight 4 - Sherry (1 Note)

I'm not a huge sherry fan.

Flight 5 - Everyday, value wines (2 Notes)

The Grenache was quite good. I would buy it.

Flight 6 - Bottle-aged Bordeaux (2 Notes)

Very good, aged well. I enjoyed both.

  • 1996 Château Haut-Marbuzet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Huge bricking at the edges. Reddish-brown, almost caramel colored. Nose is very woody. Still has lots of tannin and could probably improve for 1-2 years. Palate of wood, some tobacco.

  • 1994 Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Central Coast

Still very young colored, reddish-purple. Nose has some fruit. Palate is very smooth and balanced with some blackberry. Good, not great.

Flight 7 - Sweet wines (2 Notes)

My favorite category. I normally love sauternes, but this sauternes was sub-par. I've been told never to buy second wines from a vineyard in that region, and now I understand why. The Canadian icewine was superb.

  • 2005 Inniskillin Vidal Icewine Gold 93 Points

Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Peninsula VQA

Golden colored, nose of honey and candy. Structure is quite thick. Palate is honeyed with some apricot, lots of orange marmalade and a bit of citrus. Very intense, and very enjoyable.

  • 2005 Cyprès de Climens 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Yellow-gold color, quite light. Nose has some peach, a hint of botrytis. Very light and thin wine with a slight bitter finish. A bit flat. Not great.

Flight 8 - Port (1 Note)

Quite a good port, not too tannic. But I'm not a huge port fan.
