Introduction

A group of us decided to fill in our empty Monday night with some downtown NYC wine and steak action. My old friends at Harry's were able to accommodate us on short notice and let us bring a few bottles. Thankfully they have a great wine list so we were able to buy a few replacements for our off-bottles.

Flight 1 - Champers (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Appetizer Reds (3 Notes)

Flight 3 - Steak Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non Grenache Atlantis Fe2O3~2a, b & c 90 Points

    USA, California

Big, big, big blueberry and blackberry fruit nose. Ironically the palate did not have the alcohol I was expecting, but it did have the sweet, concentrated dark fruits that were consistent with the nose. Tough to drink stand-alone and not my style, but it scored points with me because it did work well with the big, bad porterhouses we served with it. Frankly, I would pass on a glass of this unless it was with grilled streak.

  • 1989 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was little more body than fruit. Probably needed more decanting, great provenance, bought on release. Got beat by the '90 Beaucastel tonight.

Flight 4 - After Dinner Wines at Vintry with Cheese and Charcuterie (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

This bottle had great provenance and it showed compared to some other bottles of this that I have had. Standard blood, mud, iron and leather. But better tannins and more fruits that on other bottles. We drank this after the meal and it drank extremely well with some after-dinner cheeses and meats with just a short decant.

  • 1982 Château Talbot 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Drank next to the '90 Jaboulet and another great provenance bottle. Did not have the same level of funk as on the '82 Gruaud a couple of weeks ago, which was a good thing for me. Cedar, spice and cigar box on nose. Leather, black fruits, great acidity on palate. I think this bottle would have been even better with food.
