Two common themes emerged. First the heat of the vintage was evident in almost all the wines, which were all very ripe. Second, I felt nearly all would have been better a couple of years ago.
1990 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 88 Points
France, Champagne
Straw coloured, sweaty nose: deep, rich, biscuitty, finishes dry and compact - not as generous as it was a year or two ago

1990 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 92 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Mouthwatering, intense, petrolly, bags of lime, really penetrating, very fresh, balanced, long - super

1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 83 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Buttery, estery nose, marzipan - thick, weighty, luxurious texture, but nothing in the way of distinctive taste, just vaguely vinous. Dry, unsatisfying. Several of those present really enjoyed this

1990 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Ygay Reserva 86 Points
Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Ripe, cherries, gamey, burgundian, mellow on mid-palate but tannic finish - ungenerous

1990 Clos du Marquis 85 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Still purple red, polish and cassis nose, grippy, not much fruit, simple, unimpressive

1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Fully red, round, long, but fruit has receded and has left a not-very-characterful nail varnishy mid-palate - nice enough, but not exciting

1990 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 91 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Dark, rum and Xmas pudding nose, farmyardy, very farmyardy, smokey, powerful, lovely lingering aftertaste

1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Brown, but still dark, polish on the nose, sweet and farmyardy - long, but somehow not big - a very good wine, but I've preferred most other vintages I've had

1990 Domaine de Trévallon 91 Points
France, Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence
Youthful looking, some blackcurrants in a fairly indistinct nose, a bit of brett, a touch of stalkiness, but not unpleasant and added life - warming, long, tannic - good, ineresting wine

1990 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Tourtine
France, Provence, Bandol
Sweet, but lifeless - like a wine opened several days previously - probably faulty
