Introduction

A hastily gathered assortment of wines of different Cabernet Sauvignons from around the world (and a fortified Shiraz to the cake).

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2004 San Cristóbal Cabernet Sauvignon 65 Points

    Cuba

Color: watery violet; Nose: boiled strawberries and moist tobacco; Taste: watery, no tannins, quite short and overripe, some spice and tobacco. Well, my first wine from Cuba, might also be the last.

  • 2001 Rosemount Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Show Reserve 86 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Lots of minty eucalyptus, actually a little too much, think "After Eight", black currants, spicy herbs; quite tannic, dark berries, some oak and liquorice. A food wine.

  • 1990 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This bottle had not survived 13 years in a too hot and dry closet, therefore not rated. Under a veil of wet cellar scent there was some coffe, leather, barnyard and cedarwood. Spicy, with a grassy diminished Bordeaux-taste, unfortunately also some used tea-bags. What a pity...

  • 2002 Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Catena Alta 85 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

Buttery, oaky but still fresh Cabernet scent; minty, tannic, coffee, dark berries, a bit of alcohol shines through. Long, but a slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Not really worth its price.

  • 2001 Vergelegen V 93 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

A superb leafy warm cassis fragrance, complex with lots of chocolate, coffee and spice. Extremely tannic, full, rich young bordeaux taste with warm red berries and tobacco. Everlasting grand aftertaste. Very good with a lamb steak today, but is still too young and will most likely get even better with some age.

  • NV De Bortoli 8 Year Old Tawny Port 89 Points

    Australia, South Eastern

Oaky vanilla, caramel, strawberry icecream, and some good old-fashioned tawny scents. This wine tastes lika a sweet barrel aged Shiraz, which is exactly what it is. Very tasty (but only when chilled, gets flabby when it gets warmer) and should go down well with your relatives visiting for Christmas.

Closing

With the Lynch-Bages out of the competition, the 2001 Vergelegen V was clearly the best wine of the bunch. Cuba still has a long way to go.
