Introduction

So I had a free pass on a Friday night and invited a few fellow enthusiasts over for a mystery theme tasting where I provide all the wines (intro/retro in Flock parlance). The only clue was that the 10 main wines had earned a collective 974 WA points. Many thought I was going back to the Aussie well, but I'm not sure I could hit that average from down under. As usual, what I thought might turn out to be a readily identifiable theme turned out to be quite challenging for the group, but after substantial discussion and some narrowing clues, Scott finally picked it out (before the first unveiling, IIRC).

Thought it would be interesting to include a high scoring bordeaux as a ringer and what better vintage than the ripe 2003?? Say what you will about WA point inflation for these wines (see also Spain, Australia), the 97 point Montrose came in dead last for the group and it was a pretty darn nice wine.

Served red wine braised lamb shanks which came out perfectly - will definitely be making that again in the future.

  • 2003 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

    USA, Washington

Group #6, My #10 - Not sure what happened here because there was nothing apparent wrong with this wine, but it was a clear case of which one of these is not like to others in my opinion. Full deep red color. Slightly canned red fruit nose. Big chocolately blkac fruit but angular on the palate. Seems over ripe to me, even a hint of reductiveness?

  • 2005 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Group #3, My #1 - Opaque deep purple red color. Lovely big bright briar nose with a slight hint of mint? Big focused spicy juicy black fruit palate. Focused with some of that same electric energy of the 01. My scores were tight at the top, but this was my favorite of the group...
