Introduction

Was in Chicago on business and found out about a large wine dinner. Had a blast with everyone.

Flight 1 (18 Notes)

  • NV R. Dumont et Fils Champagne Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2010)

First wine of the night...tasted very much like a lemon curd pie. Deep, dense lemon fruit, apply core, cinnamon, and very toasty. Nice bottle.

  • 2000 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Saint-Vincent 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (2/18/2010)

Lots of toast and burnt rubber. It also had a distinct oats...or oatmeal component going on too. The body of the wine had a ton of granny smith apples as well. Incredible balance and finesse.

  • 1990 Alain Robert Champagne Blanc de Blancs Reserve Le Mesnil 94 Points

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2010)

Hard to really describe this bottle in words. A literal superstar of a bottle. It was musty, with some play-do, gasoline, citrus, and paint. I found it hard to describe this bottle in any meaningful manner...but it was apparent that it was young! The consensus at the table had this lasting another 20 years....easy. Stunning bottle. WOTN for me.

  • 1988 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2010)

Brioche, vanilla, candied apples, with somewhat of a muted mid-palate. In my opinion an elegant wine, that showed very well. Others thought it was passed its prime, but I enjoyed it very much.

  • 1993 Dom Pérignon Champagne Oenothèque 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2010)

Hello! On the nose, lots of graham crackers, CREAMY apple pie, with a lot of walnuts and almonds. The finish was full of green apples and packed to the gills with acidity. A contender for WOTN without a question...wat a graceful and profound effort.

  • 1998 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 89 Points

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2010)

Not as intense as the 1988...this had sweet apple core, some tropical mango and bananas as well. This is a very green wine, with even a brief hint of peppers and sprouts on the mid palate. Somewhat awkward wine.

  • 2005 Domaine Courbis Cornas Les Eygats 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    (2/18/2010)

Felt like this lacked a bit on the nose. I'm well aware that young cornas won't exhibit the crazily intense nose of older, developed wine...but I had a hard time with the nose here. It had cherry and raspberry...but I didn't really find much else. It was well developed on the palate and had a nice creamy component that I really liked. While not my cup of tea in a sense, I could see this being immensely popular with a lot of people.

  • 2005 Domaine Courbis Cornas La Sabarotte 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    (2/18/2010)

Just as I poured this bottle, we were served a braised beef's tounge. Wow. Ok, for those of you all about wine pairings, this is a MUST. Wine felt a bit salty (which I liked), probably from the olive flavor that I got. It also had a really nice and well developed red and black fruit component. The final part, and something that I loved is the smoked ham/meats aspect of this. Really nice.

  • 2005 Domaine Courbis Cornas Champelrose 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    (2/18/2010)

This had a nice white chocolate nose, with black raspberry, slight tobacco with bits of white pepper and some dried coffee grinds. Felt this was somewhat simplistic.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale Les Hautes Brusquières 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/18/2010)

Disappointed by this bottle. It had nice tart cherry, slight pipe tobacco, with some dried herbs. This had a VERY tight nose but was drinking well. Didn't compare to other bottles I've had of this...so i'm confused.

  • 2007 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Fiancée 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/18/2010)

Very delicate color, with sweet ruby red grapefruit on the nose. A very spicy bottle of CDP with a nice amount of rhubarb to provide the sweetness. Nice.

  • 2007 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Juline 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/18/2010)

Tart and sour cherry...with an almost northern rhone nose here. Oak started seeping through the fruit and on the palate the amount of oak was overpowering to me. I feel like they were close to a big hit here, but just went to hard on the oak treatment.

  • 2004 Château de la Négly Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape Porte du Ciel 90 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape

    (2/18/2010)

Beautiful perfumed nose with lavender, tobacco, and some spicy jasmine. There is something I just find intoxicating with many Languedoc wines I've had lately. Mouthfeel was quite silky, and this was again a great representation of an underappreciated appelation.

  • 1983 Schloss Schönborn Rüdesheimer Bischofsberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    (2/18/2010)

Great comment made about the bleu cheese component on this wine. For me, lots of diesel, mandarin oranges, apricot reduction sauce and burnt rubber. A really great example of what can become of the delicate riseling grape! Wonderful bottle.

  • 2005 Parusso Barolo 35ªANNATA 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (2/18/2010)

I felt this was a bit too sweet for me. Didn't offer me the austerity that I really love about barolos. Major flavors here was overripe cherry and tart cassis

  • 2005 Vietti Barolo Castiglione 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (2/18/2010)

Quite simply a superstar barolo. Dark cherry, leather, dried tobacco with a very tannic back end. Despite the tannis on this wine, there is no doubt that it will age effortlessly and can (and probably will) mature into an absolutely stunning bottle of nebbiolo. Well done.

  • 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (2/18/2010)

Another contender for WOTN. Depsite not having the best experience with barolo, there was no doubt that this wine was the real deal. Amazing light, ruby color it had a healthy dosage of pipe tobacco and leather. Combine that with melting tar, and very VERY strong sour cherry. Many comments were made around the table that it was hard to believe that a 2005 was drinking this well, but it didn't disappoint. Combined with amazing short ribs, this was an absolute treat. I can only imagine how this bottle will develop over the next 15-40 years. Incredible bottle.

  • 1976 Dr. Alex Senfter Niersteiner Ölberg Riesling 91 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

    (2/18/2010)

Reminded me of tokaji. Lots of apricots, and peaches. Again, burnt rubber is there with apples and maple syrup. Incredible wine.
