It surely pays to go where critics don't go:

Low Profile

Rateau fills glasses with the 1971 and 1986 vintages priced at 150 and 65 euros, respectively. He uncorks the other exceptional years ready for drinking: 1923, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1959, 1972 and 1976. The prices range from 75 euros to 250 euros a bottle.

``The wine doesn't have an image outside the village,'' Rateau says. ``Foreign customers rarely ask for it, one out of 100 at best.''

The raiders judge the wines to be elegant, full bodied and endowed with an aroma of fragrant smoke and spices. The older the vintage, the richer the aroma and the more the taste lingers.
