2003 Le Carillon de l'Angélus

11/8/2008: The wine tastes like it aged prematurely. Very soft tannins, no acidity to speak of, I almost pulled my citric acid crystalls to add to the wine. Alcohol is sticking out, despite only 13% of it on the label.
If this is how the rest of the vintage will age, I feel cheated and penetrated brutally by wine professionals who touted the vintage.

Sounds like it might have been a little oxidized to me.

Rob, you just had the 01 of this stuff, what are your thoughts on Serge's experience?

The few bottles that I have drank recently from this vintage have been good, still not ready to drink yet IMO.  You probably had a bad bottle.

Oxidisation often show up as like "really bad sherry".
I experienced it with a 2004 Stefano Accordini Valpolicella Classico.
Happily the next bottle was perfect.
I also got my money back for the bad bottle.
What was really surprising was that the cork was perfect.

scratch the oxydation theory then. No sherry at all, just flaccid and no backbone.

Serge,

I have had a few '03 Bdx, although they were all "little wines" that were presented/marketed as early maturing and so forth. So far, I have not been disappointed. To the extent that numbers matter, most have been in the 85-90 range (on my personal magic metric), and perfectly drinkable, some even notable considering their pedigree (e.g., Argenteyre).

I tend to be conservative in terms of drinking windows (perhaps too much so -- one of my winter tasks is drink through my cellar more aggeressively), and so I have not had any "bigger: wines (e.g., Pauillacs). Reading our colleagues TNs, it seems that the 8-year rule (or whatever number greater than 4-5 one wants to substitute) seems to be in effect. If I recall properly, the vintage was not that well-received in Europe but was "rescued" by the American critics, although it could be that my memory does not serve me well in this instance. Looking at the drinking windows of my '03s, many are starting now, and for the better wines they seem to be reasonably long.

For the "good juice" I thnk I will wait a little, although when I have multiples, I will probably start a within-vintage vertical just for the hell of it..

The 01 was so good that there must have been something wrong with your 03 Serge.  Where are you buying these?  You seem to have had a few vintages and I can't find this wine anywhere.  The 3 01s I have I got from winebid.

John, the wine in question is a second lable of Chateau l'Angelus

Rob, I buy them at www.winewatch.com in FL and I recall 2000 vintage of this wine was pure joy.

I'll open the second bottle in couple of days just to check on it. '03 were the first BDX futures I bought and I hope I didn't struck out.

I guess it depends on which ones you got.

Serge,

I knew about Carillon as a second label, although I have not had too many second labels. What is your experience with them? Might be worth a new thread.

John

Has John identified a New Years Resolution for all of us?
