Here's a suggestion; utilizing the cool features of CT, go to "Tasting Notes".  Summarize by "region".  Select "Rhone". Group by "Apellation".  Select "Chateneuf Du Pape".  Click on "rating".  Scroll down and look at all the wonderful wine.  One of my favorite ways to start shopping.  A few standards that are generally available are

Chateau Du Beaucastel
Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe
Le Vieux Donjon

Older, the better but also watch out, CDP's can have peculiar drinking windows.  See this thread:

The 2005 Pegau is an utter rockstar. Parker absolutely missed the boat on this wine. I will stand by that in 10 years. My three standard bearers every vintage are Pegau, Beaucastel and Clos des Papes. I am also getting VERY partial to Usseglio Mon Aieul. In the more value end of the spectrum Charvin and Les Cailloux are always delicious. Vieux Donjon is also pretty terrific.

The 2005's seem to be pretty structured ala the 2001's. Don't plan to drink them that quickly. The best to drink right now are 2000, 1999 and 2004.

If you want to go for super-value instead of super-stars, this is also a good vintage, as some of the smaller producers did better than usually.

The 2005 Louis Bernard at around $28 is good value for short-term drinking.

The 2005 Feraud-Brunel at $30 is also a great value wine and it will also evolve nicely for another 2-3 years, and then drink well for another 5-7 after that.

Another great value for immediate indulgence is the 2005 Les Bartavelles, at around $34. You can also easily cellar it for 10 years.

All these wines require some decent aeration if you want to drink them now, but they are downright delicious. And all of them can go into your cellar for up to 10 years and impress the living life out of your guests after 5-7 years of aging. That is not so easy to do with wines in the $28-35 range.

On the other hand, if you buy in the $90 range (which, in Bordeaux these days, usually gets you a simple, small producer wine), you can go for something stellar, like the Domaine de la Mordoree Cuvee de la Reine des Bois. This is wine at its best. You need to cellar if for 5-7 years, and then you will have another 20 years of pleasure. This is not that easy to achieve for less than $100 these days.

Thanks for the suggestions. I only have one -Domaine de Cristia 2005 CDP in my cellar---so I need to stock up.
I had a 2001 Domaine Chante Cigale CDP Veilles Vignes during the Pats-Giants superbowl, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The wine and the game that is.

I have a few of the '98 Pegau.  WS would imply it will hold 'till 2027.  Any thoughts on the window?

Deb, the 1998 is starting to get pretty interesting, and it has a loooong life ahead. See some of my recent notes...

Eric,
I saw one note only, where you tasted in '07 and called it a "brett bomb."  Scares me a little, although you rated it 97.  Pretty over the top for you.  But, I'm in no hurry, if it's not ready...

I have three notes in there on 4 bottles although not all recent: http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?Table=Notes&iWine=1218&iUserOverride=1

Anyway, it is a pretty striking wine that seems to benefit from decanting, and, like a lot of Pegau, does have a healthy dose of Brettanomyces. For me this adds to this wine, but I know some people find that over the top.

"tasted like 2 horses had sex in my glass"  "it smelled and tasted like it had been used, before bottling, to give an enema to a donkey."

Wow!  I can't wait to open a bottle!  (In all fairness, those CT reviews were cherry-picked, but that's what I love about this place.)

I agree with most here.  My favorites are:

2005 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Cote Ronde  and

2005 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

Both can be had at great prices and they are simply wonderful.  They might not be the best as far as investment for resale, but if you're going to drink them they are simply great, imo.

If you want an everyday drinker... try
2005 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Unique   It's from vines right next to Beaucastle (Sp?) and other great CdP lands and it's relatively cheap.  It's better than many CdPs that I've tried.  Excellent.  I just bought a case and will try to get more if it's available.

I can't get Cailloux, Donjon, Telegraphe (red), Bernard, Feraud-Brunel (Gigondas only), or the Charvin, in Pennsylvania (PA).
I can get the Pegau CDP Reserve $70- only 8 available in all of Pittsburgh.

I already had the Autard CDP on my wish list. I'm trying to decide between;
2005 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape-  $35
or 2005 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Cote Ronde-  $55

I can vouch for the Cote Ronde, but I've never tasted the regular PA CdP.

I just purchased a bottle of the Pegau CDP Reserve (now only 7 left in Pittsburgh).
I think the Paul Autard's CDP will be a game time decision next time I hit the wine store, which at my rate lately will be tomorrow.

No, get all the other bottles now.  The 05 Pegau is a classic CDP and will last for 20+ years.  Here in Calgary,  Alberta we don't have the big names like Beaucastel, VT and Clos des Papes but I bought 5 bottles of 05 Pegau and found nohting left in Calgary, Alberta.

Do you think you can still open a 2005 Pegau, or has it closed down?

Already!? Damn. I just bought one! Hopefully they are like the Cicadas and re-emerge every 13 years or so.

I have had two bottles in the past few months. It is a structured beast but still offering some pleasure. I plan to drink a couple more before it goes to sleep.

I'm digging up this old thread to pimp 2005 Chapoutier La Bernardine. It's drinking really nice straight from the bottle right now. Well into a glass I mean. I don't drink my Cdps this young but have bought a few different ones. Charbonierre Vacqueyras is drinking very well right now as well.

I went to a 2005 CdP tasting a couple of months back. Notes can be found on CT under Paul S. I found the vintage on a whole to be rather good, but also rather unsual, with higher tannins and acid than normal, which means phenomenal aging potential but a rather punishing drink at the moment if you're not having your wine with food. The fruits were also on the darker end of the spectrum than normal, especially for more Grenache driven wines like the Clos des Papes or the Usseglio Mon Aieul. Saying that, some of the wines were spectacular, my pick of the bunch in no particular order are:

1. Domaine de la Janesse VV
2. Clos des Papes
3. Usseglio Mon Aieul
4. Beucastel

I did not get a chance to try the Pegau, but heard that their Da Capo is a knockout.
