With the late heavy frost and then the heat waves and forest fires, I'm hearing that the 2008 Napa Valley harvest was slim, particularly for the ultra-premium wineries.

How do you all think this will affect the 2010 through 2013 releases? Will we see lower quality or lower quantity?

Just tossing out a conversation topic...

Hard to say, so much depends on the economy, more so than the usual factors that would contribute. If the economy rebounds then I expect higher prices for 2008 Cali. It's hard not to given the size of the harvest.

I spoke to several pinot producers in Sonoma a couple of weeks ago and the consensus was that the frost did thin the crop a lot but that the near perfect growing season meant that while yields were way down, quality is quite good. Some places were affected by smoke but not too bad to really notice a difference in the wine itself.

It'd be interesting to see if this held true in Santa Cruz. Much closer to the big fire there.

The windy oaks folks were right next to the fire and they dont think it will affect it too much. That fire that was in Mendocino really dumped a lot of smoke throughout Sonoma as well. We'll see. I am happy enough with 07 for now.
