Looks like this thread won't get much use - another pitiful year for Bordeaux (don't trust the spin).
http://www.decanter.com/news/267983.html'

Still in looking for the silver lining, my 2000 and 2005's are looking pretty d*mn good.
And I can happily search the rest of the world for great (affordable) red wine.

Could it really make 2007 seem good!

Bordeaux needs to improve in other areas too, liked this headline:

PS  Good game on Sunday for the Blues too.  I only watched the second half and they were a class act (even with Anelka having an off day).

Okay, so '08 seems to be a bust (as was '07), and '06 was not the vintage the prices suggested it was. Does anyone have a sense of how these recent vintages compare to recent unheralded years such as '02 (or even '01 in some corners). I will put aside posible differences of opinion about '03, and my sense is that '04 is pretty solid.

Given various factors (my age being one of them), I doubt that I will be buying any long term wines from these and future vinrges; nevertheless, curiosity compels me to ask. Are any of the "smaller" wines meant to be any good?

Cheers,

John

These are the relative amounts I bought of each year.
I thought that as I bought them going on the best info at the time they may roughly reflect the best propositions.
Note that price clearly enters into the equation.
I'd guess 2008 is going to be another 2007 (not 1988).

I think I spoke my mind before, but here's how I relate to Bordeaux in the new millenium:

2000 > Wonderful... for the long haul... Also drinking well with aeration. Great value at release, still good value when compared to the prices of, say, 2006.

2001 > I love it. Fairly priced, very generous. Drinking beautifully now and much better than the critics predicted.

2002 > Usually I don't like it. Just found the first decently priced 2002 that is drinking really well, so there's hope. But usually they come across as dry and hollow.

2003 > Fun to drink, and -- if properly priced -- a good buy for short-term drinking.

2004 > Rock-solid. Aging well. One of the most versatile vintages and also fairly priced.

2005 > Y'know... Vintage of the century, blah blah blah... Very nice wines but none of them are drinking well now, so judgement is reserved for another 3-4 years on how well they will actually drink.

2006 > The ones I tried were a bit acidic and a bit green. But I don't think they were too bad. But the pricing is prohibitive.

Maestro,
A very positive view on the recent past in Bordeaux.
My frustration is that I have drunk very few this young and certainly haven't tasted them in a sound comparitive way.
Here's hoping your summary proves to be accurate in the longer term.
Makes be realise I need to open some of these before too long.
I'll probably hang on until mid-2009 - when I'm next in the UK.
L.

PS  Just asked Farr what they expect from 2008 and the trickle down affect on previous vintages.

Tx Maestro,
I wasn't just the vacation, but I'm finding buying good wine much harder to do now, and with the board becoming more restrictive about waffling outside the subject (unnecessarily in my view, but that's another story) it just wasn't as pleasurable.
Anyway as you detected I'm out of the funk now and working hard on the interest we all share!
Wish I could magically transplant your knowledge about Italian wines and also need a major brain transplant on US.
Made a little progress on Australia, but only scratched the surface, and of course my Burgundies are notable by their absence.
So far it's:
France (really Bordeaux) 83%
Australia 10%
Chile 3%
Italy 3%
Iberia 1%

In some ways the Bordeaux pricing and poorer recent vintages have been a prod in a different direction.
Bought just one case of 2007 en primeur.

Big storm in the Willamette Valley last night and more rain in the forecast. Not good news since there is still grapes hanging.
