I have never had Port before but I am ready to try it.
Should you aerate Port?
Once you open a bottle will it go stale after a few days or will it keep for a while?
I might be buying this--

While I don't think that most ports will go as long as most liquors after being open, I believe that the fortification really gives it what it needs to hang in there despite how long it has been exposed to air (maybe someone with more knowledge of this can elaborate).

I recently had a 20 year old Taylor Fladgate Tawny port and after 3 weeks it still was going strong (and even improved in my opinion).

Personally love Ports, but mostly drink Tawny's and Vintage Ports, so can't really speak to the Ruby's.

As far as Vintage Port, most won't last long durations, I usually try to drink them within a week or two of opening, which isn't a big problem since I usually save them for special occasions and it's usually a couple days to gone.

I routinely have Tawny's open for a month or two stored in the fridge with Nitrogen blanket. Have had Whiskers Blake, Otima, Taylor 10 year, etc last just fine that way, the flavors will change a bit, sometimes like a bell curve getting a bit better with some Oxygen after a few pours, but often dropping off a bit toward the bottom of the bottle.

For what it's worth...

Lined up for a 1970 Dows tomorrow.

Looking through my notes the percentage of Ports drank with 90+ scores is probably the highest of any wine and in the majority of cases they come out as WOTN - could mean the rest are crap though!

I'm with Hollowine on Vintage - should last a week to two but no more.

My experience mirrors Hollowine's experience.  For what it is worth, here is a quote from wikipedia:

"Once opened, port wines must be consumed within a short period of time. Those with stoppers can be kept for a couple of months in a dark place, but if it has a cork it must be consumed sooner. Typically, the older the vintage, the quicker it must be consumed."

Perhaps I'm a Phillistine with Port, but I've finished off the dregs of a decanter ages after it was opened and still loved it.
And I'm talking old vintage port.
What's supposed to go wrong with it and I'll look more carefully next time.
I might still have a drop in the UK which will be 6 months old by the time I get back to it (1973 Grahams or Dow I think, not a great year)

I usually bring a VP out on Christmas eve.  Couple of years ago had a 1985 Grahams, with a couple of small glasses left in the decanter.  It stayed in the decanter for 4 months till Easter, and served some.  It had gone a little brown, but still had some deep flavors.  It goes against all reason, but it still tasted good.

I was in Porto a few years ago buying some lovely stuff and the wine seller said that keeping the port open for a few months would not make much of a difference.  We bought a beautiful vintage port and had the bottle open for about 4-5 months and it still tasted great.  But again, maybe I am a man with utterly no taste.

Any fellow Port fans invested in a set of Port Tongs? I'm thinking of asking for a pair for my upcoming birthday, I hate seeing the cork disintegrate on attempted extraction and add more sediment to the VP, which always has quite a bit anyway.

For those who haven't ever seen Port Tongs in action, found this nice video...

If anyone has a pair, would be interested where you got yours.
