For me, the prices are high, and the quality is mixed, toward the low end. There seems to be some positive buzz about the whites, Sauternes included, and this might attract my attention. On top of all this, in terms of the big reds, I am not certain how long I will last

There's been a lot of debate on this thread http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/m_15871/mpage_4/key_/tm.htm

Personally thought about the Sauternes and bought a mixed case but I think anything else will be over priced.  Suspect the vintage will be more 2003 than 2001 but at 2001 prices.  Perhaps that's inflation!

The second highest rated wine on the right bank (by parker) is...Chateau Pavie and...
no takers on CT.

Why?

Just Leoville Barton to keep my run of 2000-2007 unbroken (no other reason).
With Margaux and Palmer coming in highly priced there's little incentive to buy.

Pavie was his second highest - behind

Bellevue Mondotte
and ahead of Las cases and Margaux - of all his scores wasn't it?
Or did I miss something?
As we know he favoured St. Emilion this year.

Colonel, I really do not know. Happiness for me is not to give a damn what critics think/taste/rank/score/etc
:)

One thing I learned in p--n business:
go with your guts, instincts and personal preferences and worry not what other guy likes/dislikes
:)

You must agree that Bordeaux wines are more or less the same - differences are in nuances only. How can I decide what to buy if nobody has tasted these wines except those critics. Especially when buying en primeur. Without these ranks/scores the only buying guide are producer's reputation and, probably, the weather conditions in that year (again according the critics). To trust or not to trust [in wine critics], that is the Question. I am somewhere between the first and second choice.

Afraid I don't, the bottle shape is all that unites them in my estimation.

Now here I agree. The experts, the Chateaux and history.
You decide who to trust (I sort of average them out).

OK, I take my words back. Wines of Bordeaux aren't all the same.
Of course, there is huge difference between "Croizet Bages" and "Latour", for example. And I do not buy them both - the first due to low quality and the second because I can't afford it. But in my price bracket (25-40 €) most of Bordeaux wines rated by WS and WA at around 90 points (Decanter's 15-17.5) are quite similar. Drinking these I'll never mistakenly think that I am drinking wine from another region (never say "never"). Then how should I name this common Bordeaux-iness other than "similarity"?

Understand perfectly.
However the 'never say "never"' was advisable - I once took a 1970 Figeac to a blind tasting with friends in China, my note read something like: "disgusting, no idea where it's from, but it can't possibly be French"!
They still remind me to this day.
That lesson is 'be wary of odd, old, single bottles you pick up and transport around the world' - they can seriously disappoint
