The Independent newspaper in England ran a good article about Gary Vaynerchuck from wine library tv yesterday. Quite an interesting article..

I quite like the internet tv show he does - especially the descriptions such as "smells of horse-crap". Not sure if he has adopted Serge's condom descriptive yet.

Paul,

I am a Vayniac and I have not heard that from him, although I would not be surprised if he did. He usually describes the aroma as band-aid and even specifies the old ones that were made from latex.

I have to say the first time I watched the show I was not sure whether I liked it or not, but after 10 minutes the guy is just so enthusiastic and likeable that you get sucked in.

I think he refered to a Latour or something like that smelling of horse-crap. Funnily enough this was a good thing, he said, to be found in a wine.

I just had this vision of picking up a bottle of wine, looking at the label on the back of the bottle, and reading:

"This exquisite Pinot Noir delivers vibrant aromas of Lillacs, Red Cherries, and Freshly Opened Condoms(*). Will pair well with roasted chicken and vegetable dishes.

I've heard Gary refer to the nose as smelling of "hore poopy" and it's like "shoving your whole head up there".

I think that his descriptions are great.

They will hardly read like Chaucer but they work because he's tasting and reacting live as it goes. I think it's that spontaneity that is such a draw. I have had mixed results buying his picks, though. There is some degree of alterior motive but it's still a fun show.

I am really careful about the wines that he likes. I have had good success with some of his reviewed wines and some I have not like as much as he does. Generally he does a decent job with wines that have a vegetal component but is really inconsistent on the fruit bombs. I have learned not to buy on his recommendation without checking CT.

That was quite funny, thanks for posting - I didn't see that live.

Gary V. is very entertaining but I agree his selections to me seem to have a slight undertone of ulterior motive (like he sells that wine!). I sort of think of him now as the Jim Cramer of wine. (Take it how ever you chose.)

While I get what he is trying to accomplish by "training your palate," I am not sure sticking a sock in your mouth, then drinking the wine will really do the trick. Of course you're going to taste the asparagus and sweaty sock in the wine, you had it in your mouth 2 seconds ago!

Either way, it's nice to see our little hobby get some good media attention. Very funny stuff.

Been shopping in his store since it first converted to the Wine Library. Some of the best wine I have found were simply by showing up in the store, talking with the staff, and finding some hidden gems. Guess I am lucky that I live near the place and if I liked a single bottle, I can go back and pick up a few more, relying on my own taste before making a major purchase.

While that clip on Conan was hilarious, I also think it was ridiculous. What GV was trying to prove I don't know. As entertainment it was great but that's all it was and it was insulting in some ways. I also have to agree with the posters who say his recommendations are really inconsistent. I actually don't mind the hyperbole and over the top promotion - I have only myself to blame as I can cancel the e-mails if I want -- but too often the wine he/they freak out about is average at best and often below average. Too many times I get the bottle home, pop it, and think "WTF?"

Even with all that, I love the place. I'd been going for years to the old building and it's a regular stop for me on the way home for the airport. I've got wine waiting for me there now as a matter of fact (2005 Chateau St. Pierre -- for the name of course.) They provide excellent service, have a good selection, and deals can be found. And, the cheese section is a great addition. One nice aspect of their system/service: when relatives and friends stop by to pick something up as a gift or for a party, the staff helps them make a selection based upon my purchase history.

All things considered you have to give him credit. He's figured out how to make a great living doing something he loves and while he's a bit of a goofball, it's a great option to have available for a wine-addict.

Dear CTers,

I am certain that Gary V (in person) is a nice guy. I have not seen his face in the post office, and I suspect he has no outstanding felony warrants. I am just not convinced that the "in your face" "tastes like horse crap" mode is the best for all parties concerned. Certainly, it brings attention to wine (which in the end may not be the blessing some think of it as), but what kind of attention? To what end? He is shrewd and excellent businessman, and I admire him for that -- truly. I am just not convinced that a sensationalist approach is the best. Please know that most people I know would not consider me a "stick in the mud" or conservative in most (if any) domains. I guess I just don't want people shouting at me or making a big deal out of something that is already a big deal. I had the same reaction when "Rockss and Fruit" was added as a default critic. His self-proclaimed goal is to express himself, not to educate others. I don't need any more skate-boarding X-Gen, X-Games, "look-at-me simply because I am alive" people in my life. I am far from frumpy (and as Elton John noted "I can [probably] snort you under the table"), but the desperate appeal for attention is a bit tiresome. If your ideas have merit, they will out. If they do not, they will not.

By the way, this is not simply my approach to wine. At the risk of incurring the wrath of the censors (with whom I agree in this instance), one of the problems of the present political campaign is the substitution of style for substance. Wines are blind reviewed to avoid the complications that occur when we know the source of a stimulus. "Over the top" wine critics/writers/vendors seek to garner attention through their antics perhaps because they are concerned that their opinions per se may not be sufficiently interesting or informative.

I simply don't have time for it.

I used to watch Gary daily. Once he was once an addiction. Then he became an affliction. Now he is an omission.
