In the pursuit of our plutocracy's insatiable thirst for oil/power
and phony wrapped in the name of freedom & liberty
our beloved "Empire" has run off course...
along with our children's children's future/security
and with all our loot/taxes & conscious.

For those of yarr who understand me dire lingo...
who have to fend for yerrselves...
scrappin off the barnacle bottom of the rum/grape barrel...
join me in the quest to find...
Treasure...
Steals...
or in other words...
the Bestest-of-the-Cheapest

All for One... & One for All !!!

ps:
with the news of bennigans and starbucks today
and not to mention all the signs of doom and gloom in this past month...
i see the beginning of the mother-of-all-mother storms approaching
i thought this thread might be timely
at least for those of us who are screwed

wow... a whole day goes by and no reply
i suppose there are no worthwhile wines at the bottom of the barrel?

well... for those who are more comfortable reading then posting...
i'll share a couple strategies i have employed in this journey.
I found that World Market & Trader Joe's have the best cheap wine selections
...Binny's & Sam's Wine Warehouse, i haven't checked yet but are on my to-do-list.

No point in pouring a piss-worth wine down the drain when you can tweak it.
For those wines i find too be barely consumable i have been mixing with either blueberry or grape juice.

I have a hard time buying the notion that price corresponds with quality...
there must be some gems in the mix.

Like for instance this beauty (i joke)

Count me in Captain Z and all my fellow lilly landlovers!

I was blazing through Whole Foods the other day to grab some emergency appetizers-hor'devours-desert for some surprise company and noted quite a few $10ish and below bottles.

They also had an automated wine sampling station. Never seen anything quite like it. There was a card slot on one side of this round island of wines, where i would image you put in some kind of special store charge card. Each wine had a digital screen above it with a price displayed per ounce. There where a couple mini wine taster glasses on the side. Next time when i'm not rushed, i'll look into this more thoroughly.

thanks fingers... looks very impressive...

"
You can find this Grenache from Calatayud, Spain for $7-$10 available at Cost Plus. Steve Tanzer rates this vintage 89 pts. and it's a perennial favorite of Robert Parker. A fantastic value, from a 60 to 80 year-old hillside vines.

"Bright red. Smoky cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by candied licorice, dark chocolate and zesty minerality. At once silky and lively, with impressively complex cherry and dark berry flavors joined by an exotic floral pastille quality on the finish. This boasts remarkable focus and persistence for the price."
