FYI ladies and gents, looks like we are bringing ourselves rapidly toward dementia with our little hobby here.

Does drinking alcohol shrink your brain?

But there is good news...about half way down the page is another article about the benefits of a "little" glass of wine each day.  My question is... how is a "little" glass of wine defined?

Here is a direct link to the second story if you want it.

I tell my students that only the weak brain cells die.

Hey Jer,

I find that:
....the differences between brain volumes in drinkers and nondrinkers were quite small -- less than 1.5 percent between abstainers and heavy drinkers.

"We're talking very small differences here," says Dr. Garbutt, who was not involved in the study. "We're not seeing 10 to 20 percent shrinkage."However, he says, reduction in brain mass is an interesting finding. "But we have a long way to go to figure out the implications of it."

to be rather encouraging news!

Bob,

And as illustrated in the second article, don't forget all the wonderful things wine does for us as well.  So what if my brain is smaller??  I have better memory, lower body mass, better immunity, lower risk for ovarian cancer, stronger bones, and lower risk for type 2 diabetes.

I say, shrinking brain one...wine six!  And the winner is...WINE!

LOL.  That's what I'm talking about.  The second article never defined what a "little" glass of wine is defined as.  It's all relative if you ask me.

Who needs a brain when you can have a wine cellar?

Seriously... studies these days don't seem to agree on anything... see http://www.staffnurse.com/nursing-news-articles/red-wine-boosts-brain-2095.html
