Maybe this is more suitable as a poll... but i'd rather hear more of what people think based on their own experience and reflection on the subject.

Based on my own experience, i can't say much...unfortunately my budget is very tight so a $50+ wine is a once in a blue moon encounter. Maybe some of you stock traders and other uber yuppie types can shed some light.

Here are two articles that sparked my curiosity/inquiry:

"Two Buck Chuck takes a bite out of Napa -
Fred Franzia, the man behind America's favorite bargain vino, has a big mouth and an even bigger winemaking empire - one that's scaring the bejeezus out of his elitist rivals."

It's a bit ironic, but it's been proven that price can make a wine "taste" better

It's funny.  I was just reading the results from the San Francisco Itnernational Wine Competition.  I noticed a few things that tie in with some of your comments.

The competition was blind and not catagorized by price.  Not surprizingly, most of the high end wineries did not have entries.  Think about the horror if their highly touted expensive wines lost out to a 15 dollar (or less) wine.

There were a few brave wineries that did enter their high end wines.  Some did well, but most got their butts kicked by cheaper wines.

I learned a lot by reviewing the results.  I think we can all learn something from this:

Happy reading!!!

Interesting posts guys. Two clicks and just about a million light years away from the Burgundy thread I just viewed.

I read about this study a few months back.  A the main things that I wondered were, who were the subjects?  Were they regular wine drinkers?  Randoms off the street?  How were they selected?  I imagine much of this info is in the scholarly write up from the authors, but I wish the media wouldn't bias the readers by omitting this info.

Second, I think one of the commentors at the bottom made a good point as well, "The article headline is a bit misleading. The authors of the study did not conclude that subjects found the $90 bottle 'tastier' than the $10 bottle. They found the subjects simply had a more pleasant experience -- pretty much what one might expect knowing (or
believing) that one is enjoying an expensive bottle of wine. Unless, perhaps, one gets stuck with the check."

Well where to start?
Fred Franzia?
I guess the best I can say is that he proves the adage 'there's one born every minute' and sadly they buy his wine.
What happens to him in the future - I really don't care.
There are many instances where 'sellers' treat their consumers like ****, and every time I can remember the worm turns.
What was that famous UK jewelry case where the owner said something to the effect 'we sell crap to stupid punters'?
The 'stupid punters stopped buying
But thanks for the alert about the 'gentleman'.

Re the 'research' - it's always been true that price affects peoples perception of products - consumers are intelligent (in the main) and rightly assume that something that costs more is generally better (normally they are right).
Unit sales however go down when price increases (Petrus sell less bottles than Ernst & Gallo).
But perhaps you can play tricks with boxed wine, like you could with margarine - put the price up and the unit sales increase (against the laws of economics) the phenomena is that of the 'ínferior product'.
Not sure what any of this means except perhaps:
Buy from someone you trust.

I may be completely off course here... but I can't help but note a parallel between wine and art here that may provide a more accurate bearing... for instance, you may have a painting you really like, others may not ... doesn't really matter... because it's a subjective thing. Now this painting's value to the outside world is based in large part on a collective consensus of measurements. Has the artist received glowing reviews from all of the right insider "art experts"? How unique is the painting, did the artist make a small or large number of similar styled pieces? Is the artist still alive? How old is the painting. etc etc etc (replace "artist" with "vineyard" and "painting" with "wine" at will).

Could it really be as simple as "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? or in other words "Bliss is in the tongue of the taster"?
