As a side post to the WS Top Ten, lets ask another question.

If you could recommend to your fellow CT chums one wine for them to search out and buy what would it be.  It doesn't necessarily have to be the best wine you have had this year, but the one you would recommend people went out and bought and the reason why they should buy it.

I'll start.

I'll for for 2005 Cederberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 from South Africa.

http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=487091

An incredibly elegant, complex and restrained wine that keeps the flavour of South Africa, but without all the cliches - and it only cost £12.  Good for drinking now but will age wonderfully well for probably 10 years.

Inspired by RoundersRob choice to do whites at the next VT, I can't help but think of this:

2005 Roger Lassarat Pouilly-Fuissé La Côte

Best dry white (maybe the best, period) I've ever tasted.  This year at the CT weekend.
Purchased from Vinfolio but I don't know if it's still available

2005 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley.  I had it pop and pour and after 15 minutes of letting it sit in the glass with a good swirl now and then, it really started to open up and show it's complexity.  I can tell that after decanting and letting it sit for a bit it's going to be wonderful.  At $23 a bottle it qualifies as a daily drinker, so great QPR.  (Yes, that one is probably a bit cliche)

Another is 1999 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs.  I had this at a tasting and really loved it.  It was light and bright in the mouth, well balanced, and worked either on it's own or paired with food.  If I could find it locally I'd buy a case.

The most interesting wine I have had this year is a Primitivo di Manduria from Puglia.

http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=234222

I got it at auction, and I would love to find more. Surreal tastes.

Fantastic idea Paul!  I love hearing people's recommendations. This actually got me looking at the wine I have had over the last year, and it made me realize that I have had some pretty tasty stuff this year, in my opinion.

Regardless of price, this is actually one of the best wines I have ever had...1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia.  I am not big on the CA style of wines, but the balance, complexity, and structure in this wine was out of this world.

Keeping cost in mind...I highly recommend the 2004 Pontet Canet.  This is an under-rated vintage coming from, until recently, an under-rated producer.  It is still a bit of a baby, but at around $50-$60 you can't beat the quality for the price, and it is a fairly approachable wine to have while your 05's age.  I had the 96 this year as well, and it was fantastic!  I picked that one up for only $80, which not a bad price for an aged bordeaux from a decent vintage.

I know I am droning on, but my QPR picks for the year...

Red - 2006 Willowbrook Sonoma County Pinot Noir  ($16)
White - 2006 Treana White Mer Soleil Vineyard ($17)

My favorite wine from this year has been the 2004 Smith Haut Lafitte.  It is drinking fantastic already and was underrated by the critics (of course I may be wrong).

If I went strictly by QPR, it would be 2003 Saint Jean du Barroux Côtes du Ventoux L'Oligocène  for red and 2007 Domaine de Pouy Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne for white.

This is a pretty excellent thread because it gets me to use the wonderful CT reporting tools to look at the 355 tasting notes I have written so far in 2008 to see what rated highly for me and then of those, sort out stuff which is either too rare or expensive and find something that really surprised me this year and here it is.

Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir, Eaton Family Vineyard, Omaka Valley, New Zealand

Sure, I had wines which I rated higher then this one during the past year but this was something that really caught my attention and surprised me and something I would recommend to others, if you can find it.  In fact, just about anything from Pyramid Valley is great.  I attended a tasting at a local shop early this year where the winemaker had flown in from New Zealand and I really enjoyed everything they produced.

My 5 wines of the year (in no particular order) :

1. 1999 Bouchard Finlayson Pinot Noir Galpin Peak
I didn’t think South Africa did good PN – this was superb, and I’m sure was good VFM though it was gifted to me, I will look out for it again
2. Passito di Pantelleria 1994 –  if you are into sweeties you must try one of these, half the label had come off with the damp from my cellar so I don’t even know the name of the grower in this case. This is from an island somewhere South of Sicily I think (correct me someone!), was light pink in colour, a fabulous alternative to cru Sauternes. This one surprised me the most of the 5 (quality-wise), I have no idea how much they cost.
3. Chateau Vignelaure Coteaux d’Aix en Provence 1999
This is a red from near Aix en Provence. (For racing fans only, the chateau owner is David O’Brien, who trained 1984 Epsom derby winner Secreto). The best red wine of the region outside Bandol for me. Google the website if interested. Easy enough to find I think.

Finally 2 from Bordeaux
4. Calon Segur 1988 – the most perfect St Estephe I’ve tasted in years (another gift)
and
5. Pichon Lalande 1988
I bought a case of this en primeur in 1989 and I’ve been bad-mouthing it for years – IMO it has finally come around after 20 years – outstanding Pauillac. I guess patience is a virtue?

I agree also that Nicolas Feuillatte champagnes are on song at present, very good VFM

crap!  I really want to list a few, but I will stick to the rules and post just one.

I'd like to recommend one of the fantastic QPR's I drank this year, but I would be doing a great disservice to the one wine that easily had the most impact on me this year:

2002 Arcadian - Pinot Noir - Pisoni Vineyard
http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=139097

Had it amidst 11 other pinots in a blind tasting, and it really stood head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd.  Sure, at $70 -$80 I feel kinda guilty throwing this out as my WOTY, but apparently you can get it on WineBid for a bit more than $50.  Rarely does any one wine really stand-out to me in a medium or large lineup, but this one did.  Phenomenal wine.

A wine that really wowed me this year has been Chateau Musar, both the 1999 and the 1997. I'm stocking up on those bit by bit.

Based on my notes it would have to be this: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=263555 The Cayuse '05 Cailloux (so far).

The year isn't over and Cayuse is planned for Thanksgiving dinner...

For now i'll go with Pio Cesare 2003 Barolo Ornato http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=410725
But the Holidays are coming and that means a cellar raid is impending. A pre-emptive strike, "Shock and Awe" George Bush style.

Ok... one fantastic wine when budget is no limit, one that is a lot cheaper but may be a little difficult to find, and one that should be less of a problem finding or buying (in that order):

2002 DRC Romanee St Vivant: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=68416
2007 Juliusspital Würzburger Stein Riesling Großes Gewächs: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=585030
2000 Beaucastel: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=58

The first wine simply because it is absolutely stunning and one of the best reds I have ever had. Really cannot say more than that. It is awesome. Ditto with the second. I never liked trocken style wines until I tried the 2006 bottling. The 2007 is even better. Superb balance, dry and racy, with an incredible amount of extract and flavour. There was just so much going on with this wine.

Finally, the Beaucastel. This was classic Beaucatel and classic Rhone. Not the most profound of vintages, but more reasonably priced than some of the superstar years, and it is starting to show really, really well now. Lots of nice meatiness and weight, with great complexity and elegance at the same time. A beautiful wine.

Hear hear on the 2004 SHL. Easily one of the best, if not the best 2004 Bordeaux I have had so far, and a lot easier to drink than the 2005 at the moment: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=92579

Drank early in the year and still in mind.  I bought half a case a couple of months after as I couldn't get it out of my mind.

This might be hard because how many wines have the majority of us all experienced?  Would be fun to do though.  Maybe Eric might post it on the main site as a reference for others.

Would this work?  It's not this year's releases but is the top 10 as consumed by CT this year - I think

I like the basic concept behind the approach but would suggest some type of qualification criteria regarding number of notes, general availability, and maybe categories based on factors like price and region.

Well, here are the most popular wines in 2008 on CT, broken down by vintage: http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?table=PivotNote&Pivot1=Wine&TastingYear=2008&iUserOverride=0&T=1000&Pivot2=Vintage

Quite a different list.

Niklas,

Have you sorted by number of notes?  My original list was sorted by score for wines tasted in 2008 so I guess the top elite 10 vs. the top popular 10?

Yep, I just sorted by number of notes, so the list is of wines with the largest number of notes written in 2008.
