OK, so I am a new new guy here on CT.  I am curious as to exactly how "current values" are computed, compiled or are merely guessed at.  In looking at some of the wines in my own inventory, I am in most cases left with the impression that I would like to buy more at the values calculated by CT.  They seem to be significantly below wine shop, wine commune or wine searcher prices.  Any illumination would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

If you are looking at the Community average value, it is just the average value of prices that people have paid for bottles (only purchases in US dollars used). I have seen some pretty crazy prices for wines (150 USD for a 30 USD wine), so people are perhaps not using the feature properly? Also, I would guess that many are buying Bordeaux en primeur, so the prices would be lower than when they hit retail. Or the wines were bought in eg 2003 and their value has since increased. There is the WineBid.com feature that you have to subscribe to (I don't) to be able to see the current value of some wines. Hope this helps some!

Niklas got it right.
I look at three prices:
1.  The price I paid - I convert my cost into a theorectical fully taxed (I buy in bond so have to add duty & tax for comparability) US$ price (this remains a bit of a problem for us foreigners as exchange rate shifts and tax changes can slightly miss up the numbers).
2.  The WineBid price (which you have to subscribe to, but it's free so as good a deal as you can get).  This is updated quarterly and shows the latest auction price.  I find it pretty good, but I ma buying mainly classed Bordeaux reds, which trade frequently.
3.  The Community Price.  The problem here is that obviously it has a mixture of purchase dates (which could be years apart).  If I beat the Community Price with a new purchase I think I've done pretty well as the CT average price was based on lower historical market prices and pretty low US tax rate (US CT members prices predominate).
Overall it's very useful and if only we had a currency feature (which Eric knows about) it would be close to ideal.

In case you haven't seen it, there is a FAQ that talks about all of this: http://www.cellartracker.com/valuefaq.asp

The main flaw I find in the community valuations is that people do not change the bottle size from 750ml in the drop down.  This skews the values on anything with more than one size and you'll see results like 375ml = 12.00,  750ml = 13.00,  1.5l = 17.00,  etc.   I wish the site would require entry of bottle size and not default to 750ml for everything.

In NH everything is priced more than whats listed  on cellar tracker, if it is even available. Even  more than anywhere else. Unless they have a 15 % off /case buy of certain varietals. Which I take advantage of and it helps a lot. I have priced wine elsewhere for better prices, but when you throw in S/H it bring the price back up so I will only buy online what I cant get in NH. Our selection BTW is low to medium stuff so Ill suffer with that for a while.

Since I have not seen a response in the "Data & Errors" forum, I thought I would re-ignite this thread about incorrect bottle sizes in CT.

Some time ago, I proposed that it be a requirement to select the bottle size when entering new inventory as opposed to the default 750ml.  Eric replied that he did not want to force people to select sizes when the vast majority of wine comes in 750ml.  Well, how about a compromise?  I'm thinking that for any wine that is identified by the small glass icon, it should be required to enter correct bottle size from the drop-down since these wines very often (I don't know if it's a majority) do not come in 750ml bottles.

Perhaps I should post a new poll?  "Would you find it too inconvenient to enter the bottle size"  or "Just leave it at default 750"?
                                                       OR
"Tell fingers to stop being so obsessive about accuracy"

Am I alone on this issue?

Thanks for your feedback!

Bob

I agree. Even though I've only used CellarTracker! for a few months, I did make the effort to go back in & change all my port & dessert wine entries to reflect the smaller bottle sizes.

Now if I can only get my hand on a jeroboam of wine, then try to figure out how to enter that one. :)

(yes, it's 3000ml)

I'd vote for requiring manual entry of bottle size information ... would be quick and easy with a drop-down menu.

Of course, I am a statistics-obsessed geek, so take my opinion FWIW.

As an avid collector of format verticals ( 375, 750, 1.5l, 3l, etc.) of the same vintage of the same wine, I wholeheartedly encourage the CT community to be accurate on what is entered into the cellar dbase.  The pricing difference between format sizes is an interesting study and one we should understand.  The drinking difference is also great fun.

This has come up before, but it would be good to here more about your experiences.
I was planning to do this with my en primeurs (they ask what size you want them bottled in) but eventually baulked at paying more for larger sizes.
