Dear All,

Does anyone have experience dealing with Cellarbrokers.com? I placed an order there, and it has taken them days to determine if they can sell me the wine (and that has yet to be done).

I do not want to start a thread to bash or praise any particular wine shop or broker. I am just curious what others' experiences are in terms of service and so forth.

Cheers,

John

Interesting concept/selection. Looks like they are simply that, brokers, and they are likely having to determine from their consignor if the bottle(s) you purchased are even still available. It may be that they list what they are offered to broker on behalf of the seller, but until they can secure something in their hands and verify condition they can't commit to you.

I would say be cautious, but since they portray themselves as a family business with many years in the trade, perhaps you should just call them and be open about your fears as a first time buyer and ask them to explain their process and what a typical transaction involves (Time/Validation/etc). I would definitely pay by Credit Card to give you the option of disputing charges if anything should go awry.

Hi Hollo,

I did call them, and they seem pretty legit (hence my not wanting a bashing session), and they are brokers, so it does take some time to figure out if it's in stock, etc. But really, can it take more than a phone call or an email? I will see.

Thanks for the post,

John

Here is a link to a discussion about CellarBrokers on the WS board from back in June.

Dear M,

Wow. I have never read such a slam. My guess is that I will wind up cancelling my order. We will see.

Thanks for the link. Wow again.

I cancelled a order after waiting 3 months for delivery (they charged my card upfront).  I asked the manager to do the refund, after a week and no refund I had to do a chargeback.

avoid.

Dear All,

After a month, I called. The person answering the phone told me the wine would not be available, and that they were sending out cancellation notices -- just had not got to mine -- right.

Surreal.

Too bad these 'legit' businesses have to put a damper on things.  I've purposely steered clear of them and two others based solely on the discussions and opinions of others in the CT forum.

I tried buying a case of Leoville Las Cases from Cellarbrokers last year. I could never get them to commit to a delivery date, despite numerous calls and email (which they often didn't answer). When I tried to get them to cancel my order, I never heard from them. I finally called Visa, who instantly and without any fuss refunded the money to my card (I was all prepared for a big fight with Visa, but the Visacard person on the phone couldn't have been nicer! who knew?), and sent me some simple forms to fill out for their records, and that was the end of it.

Bottom line: I will never order from Cellarbrokers. If may not be a scam, but it is literally the ONLY bad experience I've had buying wine (or really anything else, other than an xbox once on ebay ;-) over the Web. Indeed, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm thrilled overall at the web-based wine buying experience. Personally I think we should try and get winesearcher, vinquere, etc, to remove cellarbrokers from their lists. Finally, if you do, despite all of this, decide to order from Cellarbrokers, understand that they don't, to the best of my knowledge, stock any wine. They charge your credit card, and then go try to source the wine. Life is too short. Better to pay a few more $ and support the wine merchants who are straightfoward and honest, IMHO.
