What's the "real" deal with Charles Smith wines?  Does he really make them all?  I've heard he does not, but takes credit for all of them.  Does anyone know??

I've been visiting K Vintners for several years on my trips to Walla Walla, the Charles Smith wines and the Magnificent Wine Company wines are his two other labels. I can't say I've heard that rumor you speak to, but I will make a supposition that with the variety of bottlings under these three labels he would be a very busy person come Harvest/Crush if he were personally overseeing each one. Having visited with Charles a few times, and judging by his personality, if anyone could have the energy and wherewithal to do it I think it would be him. Either way, I personally think he is a bit of a marketing genius, especially with the MWC wines, which probably ensured sufficient cash flow to focus on K and kick start the Charles Smith label.

I know Charles is good friends with Christophe Baron of Cayuse fame, and I believe Christophe may have provided some guidance on the K Syrah's a few years ago; I think Charles also sourced some fruit from Christophe if memory serves me right (haven't had my glass of red yet tonight, so memory isn't kicking on all cylinders yet).

When you look at some of the consulting winemakers like Michel Rolland of Pomerol and some of the Cult Cab makers of Napa, it is reasonable to expect that maybe on certain of his wines he takes more of an overseer role now, but still guides the vineyard selection/management and final blends.
