Would you pay a small premium to have wine shipments delivered either via UPS or Fedex guaranteed to be at 55 degrees from the time it left the merchant?

For me it depends on where it was coming from.  Living in the Bay Area, most everything gets here within 36 hours from when it was shipped.  I would also be wary of paying for something that I might not really be getting in the first place as it would be a little tricky to verify that you are actually getting what you paid for.

I would.  I live in the deep south and  can't buy wine from April 'till September because of the heat.

Oh absolutely, I would. I live in Bend, Oregon and the weather can delay shipping especially during the long winter. But, I agree, it would be important to have some confidence that the company has the ability to keep the wine at 55. Most of the trucks I see around town are not insulated and don't have the ability to cool or heat. Curious about the reason for the question - is temp. control available, being considered, or have you had a bad experience?

More important, it would be nice to have absolute confidence that a wine's temperature, from producer to my door, has been kept within a certain range. I know that I have had some bottle variation due to improper transportation and storage. How about a maximum/minimum thermometer attached to each bottle of wine. If it's out of range, reject it.

I wonder whether any of the UK based chaps take precautions of this kind? Gosh, there's something to think about....

Small premium?  Sure.  However, since you would have to guarantee that the wine was shipped under those ideal conditions from foreign countries in most cases I think it's unrealistic.  Also, the cost for using refrigerated containers is very high and I doubt that UPS is going to slap a refer unit on each truck and insulate it for some small premium.  IMO...

Have just shipped all my wine from the UK to HK in chilled containers (not that I filled many - just from different sources). Guess this is a little more than getting orders delivered which I have tended to accept however the seller has shipped - but in England the temps don't really get into warm, let alone hot.

Since it really isn't possible for UPS to deliver the wine at 55 degrees, I purchase wine from reputable places who will hold the wine until the weather cooperates, which as we all know, can be months.  If the seller isn't willing to provide this service, I'll find the store down the street that will.

I recently found that our local UPS delivery location has an address line to give to the wine shipper that ensures that your wine, once it reaches the local distribution center, stays there. UPS is then supposed to phone you to come pick up your wine within 5 days. This procedure keeps your wine out of the temperature vulnerable delivery trucks and in a much more temperature controlled warehouse. The only caveat that I can give is that they don't always call promptly, but you can overcome that problem by watching for the "shipped" emails almost every shipper sends out.
