Is anyone seeing any good deals yet?  I have seen the Argiano 03 priced anywhere from 39.99 to 59.99 and up.  I guess it is when the seller received their shipments- early shipments are still classified as Brunellos and the later shipments as Brunello IGT.  Any recommendations for the declassified Brunellos.  I have read that these will be priced 15-20% less.

More info about the declassification would also be good! I've only tasted two Brunellos, both 2003 (Argiano and Banfi), and both were very good in my opinion. But as I tasted the Banfi I read the August issue of Decanter which mentioned the scandal of possible mixing of Merlot into Brunellos... I have no experience with other vintages, and I wondered how representative the two are of the wine style.

I too have only had a few Brunello's myself and I know nothing of classified or declassified (Maestro...a little help here ), but I just had a fantastic 03 Brunello that goes for only $27 retail at K&L ($22 as a wine club member).

2003 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino

As for declassified Brunello wines in 2003, see this post. Whether or not they are declassified (from DOCG down to IGT) does not -- in my opinion -- make any difference in the quality. They should be a bit cheaper when sold as IGT, but I am not sure it is actually happening. Some people may even be willing to pay a bit more from one of the famous "Brunellopoli" wines.

The 2003 Brunello wines are turning out to be seductive and attractive young wines. I don't think they will hold as well as 2001 or 2004, but they are very nice for consumption in the next 5-7 years.

Thanks for pulling up that old thread, Maestro. I remembered that this had been discussed, but at the time I had not tasted a brunello! Lots of wine flowing under the bridge now-a-days...
