in 10 days we all be dead

I started yesterday with:

2001 Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Trois Follots

This one is in it's prime, spice box on the nose, barely see thru darker red color, full body and long finish.

Probably one of the top 10 best Burgundies I had in the lifetime. This wine has it all and if I ever see it again, I'll buy it regardless of costs.

I am no "Chicken Little", but apparently, there is a non-zero chance of something very bad happening -- non-zero in this instance probably being 1 in a trillion or less, but not 0. See you on the other side

John, my uncle doesn't think this is going to happen:
http://arxiv.org/abs/nucl-th?papernum=9901051

but just in case he is wrong, I'll be drinking my heart out!

I have another reason to do so. As of yesterday night this baby was going straight for my house:

Serge,

I don't think it will happen either (if I did I would be somewhere else storming the barricades), but the storm(s) will provide some excellent drinking opportunities/excuses.

Enjoy,

John

Serge,

My last big drink them because I have them binge was in advance of Hurricane Rita.  I was so sure that I was coming back to a pile of sticks that I brought 2 cases of my best bottles with me on the evacuation.  I thought better to commit infanticide than to have them cook.

I remember Rita, this was one scarry storm. The latest show the storm to go south of us, I am back to 2005 screw top Girardin with Vietnamese food.
;)

I can't take much wine with us, the back is reserved for our dog.

Holy smokes, it looks like Hurricane Ike is heading straight for Galveston! GalvezGuy, I hope the evacuation and the wines go well!

I am safe and sound in Austin.  I have about $5,000 in wine (two cases) with me.  I hear that 96 Cos talking to me, but based on a recent 96 Montrose, I might let it sleep.  Right now, I am predicting a weak Cat 2 at landfall, which hopefully slides about 20 miles east of current track, which would make about a 5-8 ft difference in storm surge.  Thanks Niklas and Serge for the warm thoughts.  It looks like I am going to get a chance to see how good flood insurance really is.

Good to hear you are safe.  I was wondering what you would be doing.  Do you just grab 2 cases of your best wine on the way out?

I wonder if CT is good enough proof for the insurance people if any wine is lost?  I know I only had to show manuals for some electronics that were stolen when my house was broken into.  But that's homeowners, not flood insurance.

Good luck Galvez, be safe.

P.S. - the '96 Cos is just about one of the best wines I have ever had, and that was over a year ago, so don't shy from it if you hear it calling.  You won't be disappointed. (Not that it doesn't still have a tremendous potential for improvement).

Craig,

I have them pretty well sorted out so that I grab the most valuable wines (to me personally, not monetary) and book.  I left behind some gems, hopefully I can get back in with some generators sooner than later.

Well, I am not going to get that chance to check my flood insurance.  However, I am concerned about being able to get back in with my generator.  As of right now, they are not letting us come back to our homes (nor should they) until at least Monday.  Every extra day in the heat is another day that the cabinets get warmer.

The actual surge was around 9 ft which is 4 ft below my living area.  As far as I know, my home is OK.  If it was on fire, I am sure it would have been on the news clips.  I am going to call a first responder friend and ask him how things look in a little bit.  Thanks for the warm thoughts.

Galvez, keep us informed and I am glad that the house is OK.
In 2005 Hurricane Wilma took down the power for 10 days. My 2 wine fridges* are in the garage facing North and...
not a single leaker after the power came back.

Hope when you get back all is ok.  The New York Times has a picture of some pretty smashed up boats.

GalvezGuy,
I am in Austin ... lots of room in my (55 degree) cellar to assist you in storage should you need it.  I have spent most of the weekend in the hospital helping with UTMB hospital evacuees to my primary institution, or I would have offered sooner.
Let me know if I can be of any assistance.  If you need a place to stay, etc.  Even just a nice glass of wine (save your refugee inventory).
