2005 Maison Champy Pommard 1er Cru
Skip it, this just doesn't deserve your $26

Same producer, 3 bucks more but much better results:

2005 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

The only problem is - there are lots of Burgs in 2005 cheaper and better quality.

That's too bad.  I just a Champy 2002 that was quite good.

Haven't had any of their '05s yet though.

Bad luck Serge. Does this illustrate the perplexing fact that even respected producers can produce disappointing wines? Oh well, we can all have 'off' days/years? I suppose there's a thread in highlighting below average wines from good producers? What do you chaps think?

I've got a few bottles of Champy's 2005 Bourgogne Rouge. Hope it's a more pleasant experience!

Just recalled drinking an awful 2002 Cote de Beaune Villages from Champy; bitter, drying tannins. Yuk!

Happier drinking!

Rak, I don't think Champy was "kick ass" producer, ever. I had some decent, nothing shuttering, expereince with 2002 and thought 2005 would be even better. It wasn't.

Certainly not top tier, nowhere near. But then again, the 2001 Grand Crus that I had from Champy were very good.

Strangely enough Serge, I had almost exactly the same experience with the 2005 Champy though.

First was the Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Cras", which was strange and unimpressive: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=380299
The second was another Beaune 1er Cru, "Champs Pimont", which was really rather impressive given its price: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=444285

The inconsistency disturbs me somewhat.

Paul, yes, I find it disturbing as well. The good news is now when we are familiar with the producer, we know where to go when we want to be adventurous
;)

The other thing I am curious about. The productions are VERY low, 200 cases plus minus and...I find this wine from New York to Singapore.
How come!?

Same question I asked! I understand that Champy is one of oldest negociant houses in Burgundy, but that these wines actually comes from their own, rather limited, parcels and are not bought from growers.

The Grand Crus I bought (at half price, so I'm not complaning) were from a guy who is an Australian wine stockist who occasionally dabbles in Bordeaux. How did he get an allocation? Search me.

Paul, go to
http://www.wine-searcher.com
and make search for Maison Champy worldwide.

2 pages! If this is 90-200 cases productions,
I don't understand what makes it more available than Gallo!
