An invitation that sadly I am unable to take up :(

An invitation to taste a selection of Italy's Top 100 Wines
(the legible version for those of you didn't like the white font on the white background!)

Swig is delighted to invite you to a walk-around tasting of 30 very special Italian wines selected from the 'Best 100 Wines of Italy 2009 Guide' with authors Massimo Comparini and Derek Smedley MW - including 6 of the top 7 wines. The book has become the most concise and forward-thinking guide to the wines of Italy.

We've been given a sneak preview of the top 100 from which we've selected the wines for this tasting. The majority of the wines will also be available for sale.

Prosecco Col Vetoraz and canapés will be served throughout the evening in the gallery, where there will also be a viewing of the work of Albert Irvin and Nicolas Widerberg.

wednesday november 19th 2008 6pm to 8.30pm (9pm finish)

venue: Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG

single ticket £45 (for swig customers) normally £65
two tickets + £35 each (for swig customers) normally £65

to book phone 08000 272 272

email: lucia@swig.co.uk

Kings Place is a magnificent new London venue, with a fine concert hall, paintings and sculptures from around the world and an excellent waterside restaurant and bar.

Swig has been involved with the wine selection in the restaurant. There are some seriously fine wines by the glass at very fair mark-ups. It is well worth booking a table for dinner if it coincides with your plans this time or another. The food is modern British, with crustacea, fish, and lamb as well as beef from their farm in Northumberland.

A Guide to Italy's Top 100 Wines 2009 - The Tasting

The 2009 Guide to Italy's Top 100 Wines will come out in November, so this tasting will really be a scoop of the best wine tips of the year. Their selection includes a top Amarone, Barolo, Brunello and Super-Tuscan, but as advocates of less famous, artisanal producers you can expect to taste exquisite wines from smaller estates that are rarely seen for sale in the UK. The top 100 were whittled down after tasting 11,000 wines!

At 7.30pm, Messrs Comparini and Smedley will make a short presentation to give you an insight into their choices. They will be available to talk to throughout the tasting and will be signing copies of their new book.

This is a wonderful opportunity to taste Italy's best and most interesting wines, and to ask questions and to get buying tips on the new hot producers. Massimo (with colleague Ian d'Agata) runs the Wine Academy of Rome and no two people are more currently versed in the Italian wine scene.

Looks interesting.  When they say "Italy's Top Wines" do they actually mean some of their top wines, or just the stuff that they manage to get their hands on?  I dont know enough about Italian wine to say whether those wines they list are good or not.

Maestro - comments?

The list is solid. Most wines are quite good. There are a few are actually from the very top (Barolo Ornato Pio Cesare 2004, Brunello di Montalcino Costanti 03), a few very nice and hard to find ones (Barbaresco Maria Adelaide Bruno Rocca 04, Donnafugata Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé 07), and a lot of ineteresting stuff (I love the Sfursat 5 Stelle Nino Negri 05).

So it is well worth the money. As for "the top wines of Italy", then you'd also be looking for things such as Biondi Santi, Casanova di Neri, Gaja, Dal Forno and the top Super Tuscans, to name a few. So that heading might be too ambitious, but the list is solid.

Now I'm even more annoyed I can't be there.
Paul, it's just up the road from you!
Perhaps I'll buy some for later, I'm sure Maestro is right and they have these to sell.
Thanks for the feedback.

I wouldn't say it is just up the road from me, because I love in South London, but it is only about 30 mins away on the tube.

However, I might pop in.  With it being a mid-week event I might treat myself.

I land in the UK that morning and will be in London, the question is whether the day's offsite and jetlag will have done for me by the evening.....

We will see. Thanks for the post Colonel.

I've never met the guys from SWIG but from the communications I have with them they seem like they'd fit in real well with CTers.
Although as vendors they'd have to be cautious what they posted.
I deal with damon@swig.co.uk
