I was wondering if you people would be interested in participating in virtual community tastings.

My suggestion would be as follows:

-- A CT community member 'invites' the rest of the community to a tasting by suggesting 3 widely available wines and a weekend date at least 4 weeks into the future.

-- The rest of the community tries to get hold of the wines during that 4-week period.

-- During the suggested weekend we all taste the wines and post TNs in CT.

-- We then discuss the tastings here in the forum.

-- Another member 'invites' for the next event.

I believe we should stick to widely available wines priced at a reasonable level, so that those who get hold of all 3 wines don't spend more than, say, $100-110 in the whole event.

If you guys think it is a cool idea, I will send the first invitation in the next few days and we'll try and make it an ongoing activity in the forum.

What do you think?

Sounds great - but we must keep the budget down since we are not sharing the bottles!

How about making it "Under $25" theme? This would take care of the budget right off the bat.

Sounds neat.
Specify a drinking window - ideally as short as possible, live would of course be best.
If we were drinking at the same time it would have a bit more immediacy and be less an acedemic TN discussion.
Remember we are all over the world so it would probably need to be early US time and thus late when you get to Singapore etc.
Can you Americans drink wine for breakfast?
Apart from on 4th July that is.
L.

PS  Might like to lay down some ground rules on comments about other people comments, obviously everyone should be absolutely free to make any comments they wish about the wine (perhaps not about others opinions?)

I prefer scotch...goes better with my coffee.

Seriously, though, Maestro.  Great idea.  The price limit and tasting window (maybe Fri to Sun?) should keep the budget within reach and allow those of us who are not sharing to finish the evening without four half-empty bottles.

Maybe leave the budget at $100 per tasting rather than a per bottle limit.  I think if we keep it to one tasting a month, most of us should be able to afford it - or at least justify the expense!

At this point I'm more concerned with all of us being able to acquire the same bottles. we may have to list many and narrow it down according to which bottles can be obtained.

About the intial comments:

-- As for the budget: I suggest we keep it at $90 per event.

-- As for the window, I suggest we drink them from Friday through Sunday, but are only allowed to post the TNs from Monday, 9am PT. That way you minimize the academic side a bit.

-- As for the availability: I had thought about wines shown to be easily available on WineSearcher. An additional thing one could do is to have the virtual 'host' post a longer list (say,10-12 wines) as a Poll in the forum and have the poll open for one week. We then pick the three top wines for the tasting. Even if not everyone manages to get all 3 wines it would still be fun.

-- As for rules on opinion, we just try and keep it civilized, except for Serge, as the thing would not be the same without his outrageous remarks. :-)

That sounds good. Some of us live in states where wine can't be shipped in. But the longer the list the better the chances.

This sounds like fun.  I'm all for it.

If the tasting involves 3 "reasonably priced" wines, then most will be able to participate.  If money is an issue, taste only one wine and discuss its merits.

This sounds like fun.  If we could find a way to conduct a "live" tasting in a chat room... we could discuss impressions real time.

Sounds good, i'd be in if I'm around.

Think it would be good to allow comments to be made as the wine's being drunk and if possible have at least one organised time when we're all supposed to be drinking.

Agree with Blue Shorts. Let's ensure the wines are 'reasonable priced' but people can join with what they want. 3 could be stretch for someone on their own but not for a couple or group.

I see myself struggling to finish three bottles of wine by myself for some strange reason. I will nevertheless try manfully to keep up.

after 3 bottles!?

I'll let every body know what I think about their opinions (I do it even sober all the time) about their choices of wines, wives, distant relatives and typing styles....after 4 bottles I'll be dead quite. Should we expand tasting to FOUR bottles?
:)

I'd be in as well.  I think it would make the TN's more interesting if we were required to kill all three bottles before any notes could be given.  It would definitely be a little more colorful.

Sounds like a great idea!

You do make an excellent case for four bottles

Alright, I'll go as the first host.

I'll go for the weekend of August 16-18th (plenty of time to buy the wine, ladies and gentlemen).

I'll chose a long list and post it so that we can choose the top-3 wines collectively. I am just not sure whether the "poll" functionality in this forum would be adequate, as each user apparently can only vote for one wine. I may need to use a normal thread for the selection.

As for a "real time tasting window", we could try for 3 hours on the Saturday starting at 11:30am PT, which will be be 7:30pm in the UK and 8:30pm in Central Europe. I know nothing about chat rooms, so if anyone wants to volunteer for arranging that, great. Nevertheless, just opening a new thread on the forum here and pushing the refresh button often will give us nearly the same functionality.

Nevertheless the drinking window should go from Friday to Sunday. TNs to be posted on Monday.

Are we all up for it?

Arrive back in the UK on the 16th so my parents might find it odd if I turn up with 3 bottles and proceed to drink them while typing into a computer but will try!

The invitation is out here and the long list of 25 candidate wines is here.

Go in there and vote for the wines you can get your hands on for the tasting.

Good list, will have to see what my Mum can get 2 for 1 at Tesco!

Or rather what I can order on-line!

As per the other thread, how are we going to do a live tasting without posting TN?
