Hello All,

New to the forum here...

I have recently been considering purchasing a special bottle of wine for my parents' 40th, which is coming up in a few months. I thought it might be nice to get them a nice bottle from the year they were married (1969). I did a cursory search and could not come up with anything (highly rated, at least). I limited my search to Parker and Bordeaux, though so I was hoping someone here might have a suggestion. Surely there is a gem or two out there that has held on....Any ideas?

I also have been thinking about buying a bottle from my birth year (1975) to consume when I turn 50. Any suggestions? '75 La Mission Haut Brion?

I am not too concerned about price as I view this as a once in a lifetime event, so not really looking for wines I can "afford". I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks,

Vince

For 1969 as I recall it was not such a good year in Bordeaux, but a Fabulous year for Burgundy.  I expect you'll have to find something really excellent and properly stored if you want a 40-year-old Burgundy to be in good shape (a Grand Cru from a top grower or bottler, perhaps Cote de Nuits would be best).  Sounds like a great project!

You can always check through CT notes for wines that have been good now. Go to "Tasting Notes" from the menu at the top of your Cellar, and then summarize by "Vintage". Click on the vintage you are interested in (eg 140 notes for 1969 and 644 notes for 1975), read through notes and if you find anything interesting, go to that wine and then click on any of the external wine searching links that can be found on the left. I have found some interesting wines that way!

Power to CT!

Thank you both for the suggestions!

Steve: It seems that you are correct about Burgundy being the best bet for a "great" wine. It just seems like such a gamble. I know I said price was not an issue but I would hate to spend $1200 plus, which seems to be about average for anything that has held on, for a bottle that may turn out to be bad.

Niklas: Thank you for your suggestion as well. I did check out the CT tasting notes, which proved helpful.

At this point I am leaning towards the '69 Clos des Papes. At $75, it won't be the end of the world if the wine is bad. I think it will be interesting for them to taste an older Chateauneuf. I am sure they will get a kick out of drinking anything quaffable from that year. Plus, if that is bad, I have a bottle of the '06 I can give them.

Thanks Again!

Vince
